Notchy steering

Out and about today in the 2004 TD6 and all was good. Then as I was driving along the steering became notchy, sort of heavy...light...heavy...light etc when turning the wheel with maybe 1/4 turn or less between episodesof heavy / light / heavy. Fluid level ok.
Any ideas?

Both suggestions above could be it but also the BCU could be to blame. There is a great page on the wiki for heavy steering Thumbs Up
