Most of you will probably guess straight away -
Previously, to date I had no problems at all with my drivers door whatsoever. Late this afternoon / evening I changed the drivers side wing mirror, this obviously entailed removing the door card and some trim. When I had finished I shut the drivers door only to hear a horrible 'clack', the noise was same on opening.

I immediately removed the bloody door card again, to look for the problem, nothing found, re-fitted said items and still got the noise

Then looked at the hinges, all OK, ONLY THEN did I look at the mechanism that holds the door open against the wind etc at two positions. The single mounting bolt on the body frame for this mechanism was loose, causing the horrible noise. Tighten bolt, now perfect.

This was a co-incidence, I have never had a problem with door hinges or this mechanism with any other car in damn near 40 years of motoring. Oh the joys of life with a RR

as someone just coming in from years of german car ownership, this does sound joyful to me - at least you get to appreciate the mechanical nature of the thing

I hope you greased the door opening mechanism when you had it apart

Dimetrius, I hope you still have that spirit when the winter returns and you can't get in your car. Or worse you can get in but then after clearing the ice and snow you can't open the door again. Oh my I was cursing after years of German car ownership (still got a BMW M2 Competition for my wife) that door opening design is stupid stupid stupid....

Blackdog - Yes, any space opened up gets grease, anti rust stuff etc always.

One of the reasons I switch off rear window heating during snowstorms the snow melts, turns into ice and blocks the boot cover / hatch door.

Sounds like many new adventures ahead for me!
