5L Supercharged, Oil In Coolant

Hi Guys

not looking good ๐Ÿ˜ข just found oil in the radiator coolant on my 2015 Supercharged with 50,000ks.

The oil level checks correct on the display, but that dosnt rule out coolant mixing with the engine oil.

My first thought is head gaskets and as can been seen on the radiator cap there seems to be small fragments of gasket or sealing compound. But is it possible for oil to enter the radiator coolant by any other source?

Any advice appreciated

Paul

At first I thought you meant supercharger oil in coolant, now that would have been 'interesting'. But I guess its not identified that it is supercharger oil, but just oil into your coolant on a 5.0 supercharged engine...

Generally when coolant is in your oil then it could be a head gasket. But when oil is in your coolant I would first and foremost suspect the oil cooler, and otherwise perhaps a cracked block. But oil cooler first.

The oil cooler would be a ยฃ225 part, but as it is a super charger off job it may be labour intensive. So add a few more hours in your mind. Depending on the age of the car you may want to service the supercharger when its off anyway, and also replace all coolant hoses, clips etc once you are under there...

Just my thought...

I don't know on how to test it without getting to it. A visual inspection may reveal what's up. It could be just gasket, or whatever. Considering the costs of the parts, I would just change the lot as missing something and doing it again would cost more in labour. But any garage, main dealer or indy used to these engines should be able to do that fairly quickly. It is just that that lovely supercharger is in the way.

I've had my oil cooler leak coolant persistently so I know the feeling Smile Had my hoses and brittle vacuum lines replaced as well. Then there was play in the supercharger coupler and these things wear out so had that replaced with a service kit at the same time as well. All lovely again Smile

No my leak was coolant out of the system and depositing it without trace; well with the V.

You don't usually get oil in the water with a head gasket, the water system is under pressure so if you have a leak you will usually get water in the oil and an emulsification around the cap...

Can't see to well on the photos but that oil looks new and clean, it could possibly be gearbox oil that has got in via the gearbox cooler as mentioned for the engine oil cooler above, it stays looking new longer, although usually when the gearbox cooler fails it fills the gearbox with coolant.....

Is the car new to you, could a previous owner have put oil in the wrong filler..??

Can you see how much oil is in there..??

Most mechanics can identify oil by smell and taste..!! Pete

Hi Pete, Yes it is new to me.

I checked the oil filler cap and looks clean as a whistle. At this stage i think your right, the oil is quite clean, so may be gearbox oil, I have a bad sense of smell, but if anything it smells almost like diff oil.

Float the oil off the top, get your level correct and watch it for a few days for any changes to levels or increases in oil, you might be lucky that some dope has topped up the wrong reservoir in the past.

Good luck

Thanks dingg1,

good idea, I will give that a go.

Just had a friend over whos a mechanic and worked on these, he also says its likey the radiator/oil cooler.

Much relieved, as I was thinking it was much worse.

Looks like i will be up for a radiator/oil cooler replacement, but first i will float the oil off and keep an eye on it over the next few days, still hoping oil was put in by mistake. 2015 AB 5.0 Supercharged

That is very clean looking oil.

Not too likely to be old engine oil as that would be much darker in colour. Perhaps you may get lucky and some dope has put it in the wrong hole when topping up, but in all honest you have to be particularly dense to do that..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

If im lucky, they just dense ๐Ÿ˜

but at the moment researching transimission coolers. Looks like a small unit at the back of the radiator, part no. LR036354
Maybe easy to replace from underneath. Downloaded the service manual from the wiki but unfortunatley not all the pdfs download.

Dont underestimate how dense people can be especially when their mind is on other things.

My ex bil when working at a garage as a just left school teenager was asked to top up the oil, he topped it up until it was full ie full to the limit as in nothing else could be put in Laughing
