Engine/gearbox/sensor fault?

Hi all. I’ll greatly appreciate any input on this mysterious issue I experienced this week...

On Monday, I was driving my 2011 TDV8 Autobiography back from a venue 20 minutes from my house, and about 8 minutes into my journey, I had just joined a dual carriageway (at something like 40mph, 4th or 5th gear), I put my foot down to make some progress and, all of a sudden I heard a “clunk” from beneath the floor, the car lost drive for no more than a second ... and then continued the rest of the journey without any further problems, driving at various speeds, up and down the box, giving it various states of gas pedal. It was almost like the transmission had suddenly and very briefly, jumped out of gear and back in again.

Then, yesterday afternoon, I was on my way back from a similar appointment, and about 8-10 minutes into the journey, I was sitting at a red light with the engine running, transmission in ‘D’ and foot on the brake. I was about to pull off from the lights and exactly as I tried to do so, the engine just quietly cut out, and the gear indicator on the dash was flashing “D”.
Still stationary, then with hazards on, I shut off the ignition, restarted the car (on the first attempt), put it in D and continued the journey, again without other problems.

On neither occasion did I get a warning message or check engine light on the dash. So I’m really quite baffled. Neutral
My old man reckons perhaps an engine or gearbox sensor may be on the blink.

I’m very grateful to Euan at Greenbank4x4 in Aberdeen for agreeing to have the car in next week to try and diagnose it. I’ll reply on here regarding the outcome. But in the meantime, I was just wondering... Does this sound familiar to any of you? If so, what was the culprit and the resolution?

Best regards,

Resolved!

So, thankfully, it just turned out to be just a duff Crankshaft Position Sensor. Smile
Part number LR126062, £75.34 plus VAT and fitting.
Apparently it’s a pig to get to, though, because it’s way up behind the engine on the drivers side, somewhere near the starter motor.
But, while the car was in, I took the opportunity to get a big service completed and the front strut sensor cables replaced.
Top job once again from Euan at Greenbank 4x4. Thumbs Up
