Interesting question...

HI All, - I wonder if I could ask for your advice here. I've bought a Light Control Module to upgrade my lights/wipers to auto and it arrived all looking good. I've since had an email from the seller with the following.

Ashley ,
have you done anything with that LCM i sold you ? Problem is I have sent you the wrong one !!! I didnt realise that the LCM works in line with the Speedo instrument binnacle and i have sent you the one that i need for my car . I have another off a 2007 car with Auto lights , would there be any chance of swapping them over ?
Cheers

Now I haven't fitted it yet as I haven't got the sensors or other bits I need. I'm happy to return it for a swap but wondered if this seems a plausible reason - or any reason why I shouldn't want to swap.?

Any help appreciated
Thanks Ash

Will a 2007 work in your car? I would double check 100%.

If the one he's sent you is coded to his car then he might want it back, otherwise he'll have a tamper dot on his binnacle.

Hi mate

I am just doing the exact same project, my LCM and light sensor are on their way as i type this. If you send me the part number from your unit i will tell you what version it is and also what year range it is from. What car is the 07 LCM from as if it is from an 07 BMW it will NOT work in your car. If it is from an 07 Range Rover then it WILL work. The seller is sort of correct the LCM controls a MASSIVE amount of vehicle systems and does store a copy of the vehicles milage data (which cant be modified) if the milage on the replacement LCM is higher than your actual car milage it will show a black dot on the dash indicating a milage discrepancy in the vehicles ECUs. If the milage is lower than your actual milage then when you connect it to the car it will adjust its milage record to the highest recorded in your vehicle. But when the seller says that they need it for the speedo they are not quite right, the cluster looks after its own information apart from the milage data which is stored in a number of ECUs in the vehicle - speedo, LCM, immobiliser etc...

I was told it is from an 07 FFRR so should not need any coding and should work straight off.

I guess I don't want to replace it if I end up getting one with 100K on it as I'll end up with the "black dot" (sound like something out of Pirates of the Carribean - and I don't want no sea creature after me !)

It is a YWC500282 LCM 4 Basic LR 71601

numbers are as follows:

037260800 033512 00

HW:07 / SW: 2.2

If any of that helps ?? Ash

Yes that part number confirms that it is from an 07 onwards Range Rover, in theory you should be able to just swap the unit over and off you go, but if your vehicle has options enabled that the 07 vehicle didnt you will need the unit programmed to enable those features e.g. TPMS, engine type, follow me home settings etc... The LCM stores a lot of personalised settings that can be enabled by the request of the customer at the dealers

Sorry i mad a mistake about the milage, forgot i was writing about the LCM, its the instrument cluster you can't modify easily (the only way to modify it is to remove the EEPROM memory PIC from inside the cluster and replace it with a new chip) You are correct you can 'modify' the LCM milage using PA Soft (which is designed for BMW's)

Or using my Faultmate Extreme Mr. Green Whistle lol

I was just letting comports know that he may need features re-enabling after he has fitted it - dealer, all comms, or faultmate can all do the same job. I was just telling him that the personalised options enabled on his vehicle will have been enabled by the initial customers request.

So are you all suggesting that I should just swap it out for another one. what possible issues could it cause me. I suspect I would have to get a new part number and confirm the details for it first? Ash

Personally if the unit you have is working then i would keep that one and just say you have already fitted it, as you dont know what rubbish he may send you in return. He can fit the unit that he has in his car as basically from 05 onwards they are all the same upto 2010 02-05 is quite different and cant be fitted to later models (ie does not have auto lights for example, among other things) If the milage is out tell him about PA Soft which can sort that problem out
