Burning Rubber smell - Calipers??

SWMBO has been complaining about a burning rubber smell when she tows the horses (c.2.8 Tonne). I have never smelt it so as usual, ignored her, however I went showjumping with her this morning and low and behold burning rubber smell and both rear wheels were toasty hot, now I have searched as thought sticking caliper however only happens when towing?? Any bright ideas esteemed members, I thank you Thumbs Up

If your horsebox has a high nose weight it could be the tyres overheating. Do you increase the pressure before towing? If your calipers are at fault the discs usually have a blue tinge to them.

Thanks Kevin, would that account for the wheel being hot as well? Thumbs Up

I tow a 2 ton caravan and the rear tyres get quite hot which radiate heat that makes the wheels quite warm to the touch. If your wheels are getting to hot to touch then I would suspect that your rear brakes are binding.

Two points to add to the above already mentioned -

Recently my rear brake callipers seized, thus brakes were binding, the heat that went into the wheels and tyres was an education, and that was driving gently to get home to fix the issue, and that was without enough heat to see any blue colour on the discs. Enough heat to burn my bloody fingers though.

Is the trailer braking system working? Horse boxes I have towed had the trailer axles braking system, if this isn't working this will put extra stress on the car's brakes.

So far in this house, daughter - various injuries, grand daughter - broken arm, me - two broken ribs, oh and years back my mother had concussion and hospital visits, all from coming off horses, it seems you have the right idea Rosco Stay at home. Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

Just to add to others' comments, the 322 braking system only uses the rear calipers when the car is heavily loaded or when towing, and they are prone to seizure, mine had to be freed off every year after maybe year two, so sticking rear calipers would be my first port of call. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I mean rear braking just utilised when towing or heavily loaded

CS, I have been towing with L322s for 16 years and never had this issue, could the car not be seeing the trailer ? First one I have had when the reverse sensors keep going once hooked up. think I am answering my own question Rolling with laughter

OK, what I should have said was that the 322 mainly uses the front brakes, and the rear calipers come into use to a greater extent only when braking hard or there is extra load including from a trailer.

See owner manual under "Electronic brake force distribution". Only Range Rovers since 1988

An additional thought Rosco, I would imagine that your better half drives the way I do when towing horses, 'driving gently' with no harsh braking etc, so I would definitely check out the rear callipers AND the trailer brake system ASAP

Trailer mechanical maintenance is something many people don't think about - No offence intended - the UK is one of very few countries in Europe now that does not require an MOT for trailers / horse boxes - which shows how far behind we are in some ways. From past experience, on the yard I go to, most horse trailers I see are parked up after use and immediately forgotten, out of sight / out of mind.

Update , sort of !! The car is not recognising that it has a trailer attached due to the LED lights apparently, I need a resistor. Question if it doesn't recognise it has a trailer attached, will that mean the trailer brakes won't work, car brakes have been checked and all good, trailer brakes work OK independently from car, .... any hapl appreciated Thumbs Up
