Issues with turbocharger actuators

Gents,

I own an L322 2009 TDv8 FFRR (92k miles) which starting showing some fault codes recently, Keith Gott in Alton identified that these were relating to the dreaded actuators on both turbo's (not just one). They have come up with the following price plan:

Air suspension fault:
Test wiring and replace air suspension compressor cost depends on type of compressor fitted, type identified after strip down. £590.00 inc vat Hitachi Type or £890.00 inc vat AMK Type

There are some options on the engine system fault:

Remove front differential and ATTEMPT to free off seized actuators (Repair cannot be guaranteed) £850.00 inc vat

Remove turbochargers, fit modified link rods and reassemble £1900.00 inc vat

Remove and replace turbochargers with remanufactured units £3600.00 inc vat

Remove and replace turbochargers with new units £5250.00 inc vat

What are your thoughts?

I have read on this forum that it is possible to free up the actuators using a coat hanger and WD40 but to be honest I have a 5 week old baby and a toddler and simply don't have the time to attempt it myself at the moment.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any further info to help.

Thanks

I would be inclined to get another quote from somewhere else to help put it into perspective. They are quite expensive there... 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

What faults are you getting?

Is the air suspension working or is it an intermittent fault or completed stuck?

In my old TDV8 the local garage managed to get to the left hand turbo actuator from underneath wihtout removal of anything (or maybe just the scuttel panel and wheel) and worked it with lubrication. I would see if someone could do that for starters before you spend thousands on new turbos - which as Kooky says l Shocked . I was getting an intermittent warning on display and lumpy turnover but no MIL and the IIDTool was showing that one of the turbo actuators wasn't moving when I switched off. They are meant to do a few cycles of opening and closing I think on switch off.

£850 to free up stuck actuators is taking the Censored , quite frankly. Anyone with the knowledge (an LR specialist for example) will have encountered this a million times and know exactly what they are doing. It honestly takes about 10 minutes to do the driver's side - I know because I've done it - and most of that time is taking the wheel off and putting it back on.

I'm told the passenger side takes a little longer, but it can't be more than an hour all in for both but in no case does the diff need to come out. An hour's labour, some WD40 to free it up and a bit of silicone lubricant to finish. No way is that anything like £850. I'd seek a second opinion, ideally from a local indy if you can find one. 09 RR Westminster 3.6TDV8 - Stornoway Grey / Black interior - now gone (sad face)

The suspension works fine, occasionally in rare circumstances it has come up with a fault but taking your foot of the brake and re attempting a lower / raise and it works fine. I do not plan to do any work to the compressor.

Having read yours and the other responses I will contact another garage to ask if they can help.

Thanks for your response, I'm going to go to another indy to see if I can get a better quote and not feel like I am being fleeced.

A new AMK compressor is about £450 so I would like to know what the other £400 is for. A Hitachi compressor is about £150 again what's the extra £400 for?
Get another quote they are extracting the urine.

I've contacted another indie closer to me and will get alternative quotes.

Thanks all for the guidance!

Get a good local mechanic to give you a price.

The actuators on both turbos are both accessible with long reach tools and lubricants. This shouldn't be more than £120 In an independent garage. It's unlikely the actuators are irreparable. Double that amount if they need to move things in the engine bay to reach the nearside turbo by hand. The offside turbo can pretty easily be reached from underneath and the wheel arch (I was fiddling around under it the other day). What I've found though is that a lot of garages assume the Sport and Vogue are the same and it's a body off job - The Vogue is a monocoque chassis so, there is no 'body off' and, although it can be tight, it's pretty straightforward to move things out the way to reach what you need to get to.

A good price for complete turbo replacement would be about £1,500 but, it doesn't sound like you need this.

I had a stuck l/h actuator linkage on my TDV8 when I bought it a couple of months ago... it had been stood for a while before I got it. I went to my local garage and we put it on the ramp. I sat in the car and Jon who owns the garage got his torch out and used a long rod and a can of wd40 to free up the actuator whist I cycled the ignition a few times (the actuators go through a test cycle each time you turn the ignition on and then do the same after you switch it off). Took 10 mins and he did not charge me....

Been fine ever since. L322 2007 TDV8 3.6

Update: took it to a local indie and he solved the issue by loosening the stuck actuator. Cost £200 all in!

Much better than £6k grand!

Thanks for the help.
