DPF regen dongle

http://www.diagnostic-associates.co.uk/dow...0DPFDR.pdf

Greg,
Please talk us through how you use this device.

1) At what point do you plug it in and how do you rate it ?
2) Do you still have to get a soot level in excess of 17.5g then manually initiate a regen? at the start of a decent trip ?

I have considered buying one , but 2 things have held me back.....
a) my local independent insists that you can’t initiate a regen when ,like me you have got PO 40...etc alarm.
b) Gap should pull out their finger and get the function working on our iid’s that we have all bought.

Hi Mike, I'm not sure why Pat won't update the IID Tool to do a forced regen of the DPF. I have this option on my Bearmach Total and it works fine. As there is also a DPF dongle available it means that there is a way for the software coding to be written in to the IID Tool. I'm sure Pat has his reasons but as yet, I haven't seen anyone mention his response about why it's not available. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

dennij,
I think Pat would say low priority.
Unless we all constantly remind him how much we would like this function, he probably sees getting the tool working on newer models as higher priority.

Mike it's a bit brutal in operation - by that I mean it only has a series of beeps and light status/function.

The beeps don't happen as described in the manual which sort of say it's not working....

But it doesn't seem to matter...what I do is go for a drive out of central London when it suits me, and I'm nearing 20g soot level.

Then I plug in the DA and drive on trying for min 40mph. As I said the beep feedback kinda suggest it's not initiated the regeneration. But I drive on for a bit, unplug the DA then swap in the IID.

After a while at 40mph (but not 50 as standard process requires) it'll eventually send the temps soaring. Bear in mind the DA is unplugged by then, it's only the IID in the port at this stage.

It won't start the burn if you hit traffic, it seems to need around 10-12 mins at 40mph minimum. Anyway in my world I am heading out of London on the A40 and it does eventually go up to a 50mph limit. By which time a burn is well under way.

Without the DA I'd have to keep going. But with the DA instigated burn, I can pull off next exit once I know the burn is happening. I can pull up at a red light, go around a roundabout, with another possible red light before re-entering the A40 and back up to 50mph. Now I'm head back to home and the limit is 40mph, then a set of lights, then traffic, then 30mph as I'm back near Baker street. Then I wind through the back streets stopping and starting and slow driving to my home.

I'll pull up and park and at idle it may still be burning at 600 degrees, or until the grams is low like 2g.

You can't do any of that as standard regeneration.

So I like the DA and it works.

I also bought another diagnostic that will force a regen and also clear a red warning too, it is called Nexus I think. It was cheap, like under £100 but it's just sat there - I haven't had to use it actually as the DA has been serving well.

Mike as far as your Indy saying you can't with the P040 error, I'm not so sure he's right. But can't say because I did my sensor before I got the DA.

dennij I think I posted Pat's response on my "What to do if your DPF is blocked" post. He said they are considering it or something like that. But that was over two years ago and he's not keen for some unknown reason. Liability?

.
. Cheers, Greg

Thing is DrRob, nobody tells you this stuff upfront...
I'm a hobbyist / into fixing things whether cars or whatever so I made it work.
But a regular schmoe could not / would not have the patience.
I read that the new Defender petrol has a DPF now...

Hi Greg, I think you’re right about the liability issue regarding Pat adding this to the IID tool. It’s a shame but if he doesn’t want to do it then there is nothing we can do. I think the alternative is to purchase another DPF regeneration device such as those you have already mentioned. It may be another expense but still cheaper and more convenient than having to pay out for the DPF to be cleaned/replaced 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

It may have been low priority for Pat @ GAP, but it was certainly a bit of good work when he offered it to me in Beta (development) form.
I have now carried out three forced regens using the iid and it couldn’t be better as far as I am concerned.
It works perfectly and is so simple to use.
It clearly lets you see what is happening to the temperature and the soot level as you are carrying out the Forced Regen process , and like Greg’s is much more forgiving to stops and starts in traffic etc. until you get down to very low soot levels and press the Quit button.

Two points worth mentioning,
1) It works when you have the P.O. 40 EGR …etc fault showing.
2) The process doesn’t count on the number of successful regen count. Mine has been reading 183 for 3 months now during which time I-have forced 3 regens at an average of 390/ 400 miles between them.

Interesting, mine is a MY2011 and it shows 307 successful regens, about a 1/3rd of the demanded level.

Wonder why mine is so much higher, do you have a low mileage? Christian.
