Td6 fuel economy

Has anyone fitted a speed hawk bhp plus tuning box to a td6?
Would be interested to hear your thoughts.
I am getting around 17 mpg running around and 24 on a run
Thanks

I don't know how you're driving, but this is what I got from my TD6. These are calculated by brimming the tank, not the indicated values, which are too optimistic. The low numbers are when I was towing. As you can see, I normally got mid to high 20's.

There is a tuning box fitted to my car (cant recall the make) , found it plugged in to the ECU by accident ! Wondered why everyone said the TD6 was slow but I didn't think so ! Basically I get on average 28 mpg which includes hilly routes and a bit of spirited driving . Not bad for a 2 ton brick Smile

Yeah, mine had a box. Think it made an extra quoted 14 bhp. Was installed by the previous owner so I don't know how much difference it made.

KurtVerbose I’m impressed that you work out your mpg to the nearest millimetre 😂

It's a bit sad isn't it.

I managed to quit. No idea what the current 3.6 does.

Fuel economy should be improved with a good quality tuning box, but I got to admit that those bhp plus boxes look seriously old fashioned with just one measurement. Reminds me of those terrible Ebay tuning boxes where it wasn't much more that a potentio meter in a black box. With the mileage so much lower (like a 5.0SC Laughing ) I suspect it is over fuelling, a common problem with such boxes.

There is only one brand I would trust my cars with which is from DTUK https://www.diesel-performance.co.uk
Ok for full transparency, I do class the owner a good friend of mine, but I didn't in the beginning. I had a old skool box like that many years ago, then decided to do a comparison test for the forum. And got the rolling road involved at a remap place. The remap guys will always be remap guys but they were very impressed. What I like is how it originates in Germany and is TüV tested. But when I was towing my powerboat I noticed a couple of flat spots in the engine, so I asked DTUK whether they could adjust the map; ended up going up to the North East. Had a laugh and they reprogrammed a map for mine which removed the flat spots which was awesome. Also had it on my AMG cars, and the Golf R. Only reason I'm not doing my 5.0SC is because of the nature of the supercharger, that needs mechanical work done and then a remap to deal with that. Not a multi-point tuning box.

If you like the power now, I think based on those mpg figures it can be significantly improved....

Thanks for the replies.
I don’t drive the car hard, my commute is 10 miles each way mainly on the Avon.
A week of doing this is giving 17.5 mpg

Sounds like there's something wrong with it.

Hey Bl4ckd0g interesting to hear your review on the tuning box from DTUK do you think it is worth while on my 4.4TDV8? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

I agree with Kurt. Not driving it hard and getting 5.0SC fuel consumption doesn’t sound right. I would remove that tuning box first to get to a standard. And then work from there.

Jay, definitely. It would make a big difference. But, also their pedal box. I still can’t get my head around it fully as it doesn’t deliver more power and in my mind I could just press the pedal firmer. But somehow it really works and gets rid of that initial inertia and feels like it’s ready all the time. Yes, he is my friend. When I got my Golf R he said I should get one; I was like nah you are ok. But he sent one out to me anyway, and not only did I keep it. I paid him for it and ordered one for our Mercedes AMG as well.

My old Navara was my tow beast, and that one got a measured 24% improvement in fuel consumption. With the mileage I did then it had return on investment within a year. For that car it was a utility.

But in short, if I had the turbo diesel I would instantly.

Lipper, my old TD6 used to avg low to mid 20s that was town driving with a bit of motorway too and when towing my caravan (Twin Axle @1700kg) i used to get 17 - 19 on a run.

Bl4ckd0g thanks for the insight i think i may treat myself in the next couple of months. out of interest what Navara did you have the 2.5 or the V6? i am finding my 4.4 is better on fuel that my V6 Navara was over all. so if i can see an increase on fuel efficiency that would be a real win especially if it were 20%+ Thumbs Up 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

I had the D40 Automatic Aventura early when it was released. So with the 2.5. I used to get iirc 21mpg. And with the DTUK box around 27mpg. Had it on the rolling road same day before and after and before it was 168Hp after 204 iirc. Really noticeable.

Turbo was noticeable from about 1800rpm, but I want more torque earlier to pull my twin V8 powerboat more easily. So they changed one of the curves for me. It made it as standard on all subsequent sales of the boxes as it was perfect for towing.

I’ll ask the owner whether they go sheets specific to the 4.4 for you.
