Wiper "thud' on direction change

Guys,
To be fair the car has done this since I got it but a few recent long journeys in the rain and it's beginning to bug me.

Its simply that at the end of its sweep the passenger side wiper thuds as it changes direction in the middle of the screen. I have changed the blades OEM LR to OEM LR although (I have ordered some Bosch ones) and in every other respect they are fine - good contact, clean sweep etc.

Is it a "feature" or is it something that can, and therefore should, be fixed Question Geoff

You can adjust the angle of the wiper blade relative to the screen. If you get a thump then the glad and arm are not in the 'optimal' alignment. Remove the cover over the nut at the base of the wiper arm, loosen the bolt and then you will be able to adjust the angle of the arm relative to the screen as there is a cam type fitting. I guess it should be about 90 degrees to the screen but play with it till you get it as quiet as you want.

Thumbs Up

Simon

Plenty of them do this, in fact probably all would if the wipers weren't changed regularly. The worst case is where it gets so bad that it scratches the screen at the direction change point.

I ended up changing the whole thing for genuine items and it's still far from silent. Crap design I'm afraid. And I still don't know why the Aero style blades are not available either from LR or third party. They are for D4, D3, Freeloader, SSRR and all Jags have them as standard. Confused

EDIT. There is a TSB about this somewhere. 86 degrees is mentioned from memory. Quite how you measure that is beyond me but I have also played with this adjustment. It makes a small difference on a new blade and is worth doing.

Thanks guys I'll get onto it tomorrow, it's actually a Right Royal PITA (RRPITA Very Happy ) I was pulling as hard as I dared but as it was cold I was concerned about breaking it. I Think I only need to do the passenger side but of course that's the one in the middle and it would be handy if I was about 6'7" so i could reach and you need the bonnet open, RRPITA Shocked Geoff

Geoff, if you feel round the 'arm' section of the cover you can feel that it overlaps the arm underneath, just pull this out sideways a little and the cover will lift off Thumbs Up

I have a similar issue in that my passenger wiper is starting to scuff the glass at its max wipe point. Its slowly getting worse but doesn't make any thud noise, it does smear when wiping?

I adjusted the rest position after purchase because I felt it sat too high but having seen the dimensions have checked and it sits at 40mm like the drivers side. Angle is around 90 deg maybe 100 deg rather than 86, might these differenced be causing the problem?

I have to say I think it loos correctly positioned at its current dimension rather then higher up and I even took a photo of a new one at the dealers to use as a guide, before seeing the dimensions in this thread. I don't think the new ones are this dimension?

I fitted new wipers at the same time I adjusted them so doubt its that?

What dimension do others have?

Cheers

Carl

When removing the wiper arms, if you undo the nut then making sure the nut is wound down the thread enough to be flush with the top of the spindle. Then take some plummers adjustable pliers (the bigger the better) and put the jaws on the top of the nut and under the bottom of the wiper arm and squeeze together... The arm should pop off, the nut both stops the arm from flying off and protects the threaded end of the spindle from damage with the plummers pliers...

I offen spray paint my arms whilst they are off as they seem to take quite a battering and degrigate over time...

Craig Thumbs Up

Craig, have you got yours set as per the dimensions on here?

I've set it using the current position of several new ones at the dealers, lower then 58mm but my screen is deffo starting to scuff at the point where the wiper reaches its max wipe position.

I think it looks right but its damaging my screen !!
