David,

The money spent is outweighed by your satisfaction of the (**almost**) finished product and the knowledge that you have done it right rather than risk a bodge job at the hands of others. This thread has been an excellent read and it will pay you back if or when you sell but it has also inspired others.

Good job Sir Bow down

regards

John

Shiny bits arrived earlier today so after another couple of hours in the workshop, the SC is finished Smile

The worst bit of the whole job was the shock absorber mounting bolts. They were seized solid to the hub. Freeing them off took longer then the actual job of changing the struts did.

Both of the original struts were dated December 2006 so were definitely the originals to the car.

There’s a chunk of metal on the top of the strut that acts as a damper according to the workshop manual. On the drivers side strut it was seized so once the strut was off I cut the air bag open so I could grip the strut with a pair of molegrips. I noticed that the drivers side airbag had a big puddle of oil in it… The outside of the bag was totally dry though, you’d never know it had burst.

When you press the shock absorber it just collapsed. I noticed recently that it seemed a bit harsh on a couple of bumps, this is probably why.

I cut the passengers side one open and it was dry. This was the one that burst. As you’d only ever change them in pairs, I’m glad it did now as it means the drivers side is now right.

The car is now back together, I’ve checked all the unions on the air bags with soapy water and they seem air tight but I’ve left the car in the workshop with the suspension on it’s highest setting and the battery disconnected over night to make sure it stays level. If it does, then I’d call it another job jobbed Smile 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Went into the workshop this morning and the car was still nice and level at full height so I tidied up and put things away so I could get the car out.

I then remembered that I hadn't fitted the new side repeaters that had arrived from Duckworths. One of them looked manky and couldn't be cleaned as it was internally and the drivers side one had started to let water in so it was half full of water. They now look nice and clean on the shiny black wing. Smile

We then took it for a drive...

Wow, that work has really paid off. The difference in the way the car drives is incredible. It's so much more composed on the road and the way it rides the bumps is now superb.

This one has never felt quite as nice as my last Supercharged Range Rover did but this suspension work I've done on it this week has changed that. It's now easily as good as the other one. The lad who refurbished the wheels hadn't got the balancing on them quite right so there was a bit of a shake at 70 on the motorway. I went back home, rebalanced the wheels and took it for another run and am pleased to report that the wobble has gone.

I'm a happy Range Rover owner this weekend! Smile

Back in February I changed the wipers for a set of HQ flat blades from eBay and was never impressed with them. Fast forward 9 months and they’re useless. Unfortunately I misplaced the plastic adapters that I removed from the wiper arms so I couldn’t fit normal blades back to the arms. Irritating as it was, I used it as an excuse to get rid of the rusty spots on my original wiper arms.

Around £100 later, thanks to Rob @ Duckworths, the rust has gone! Very Happy

Old arms:

New Arms:

After fitting a set of Bosch 808 wiper blades to the new arms, I’m pleased to report that the silent wipers of the RR have been restored and the arms look nice through the screen again. That rusty patch where the arm pivots was right in front of my eyes and irritated me every time I saw it. Laughing At least now it’s gone!

I’m hoping (or rather my wallet is) that this might be the last update on this thread for a few weeks/months now! Laughing

Thanks guys! She's getting there Smile

Still got a noise in the drivetrain that winds me up so I must get time to replace the diffs and bearings that I've got.

The seller of the rear diff was nothing short of superb and refunded me for the wrong part in the box so I'm on the lookout for a rear diff again. If I can't find one I'll likely give Rob at Duckworths a shout.

I'm trying not to plan much over the Christmas holidays as my wife is going in for surgery just before Christmas so don't want to be too far away. Am hoping that I can find time to fit my deployable steps and do an engine oil and filter change. She's only done 4k in the year I've had her but I'll stick to annual oil services.

On that note, I can't believe that it's 11 months since she arrived... it's been a roller coaster trip. Not gonna lie, I've been close to walking away when the gearbox/transfer box hassle was going on but I'm glad I didn't. This car will be mechanically perfect before long and then I'll be happy. I HATE noises when there shouldn't be any, it really takes the enjoyment out of a car for me.

Difficult to be a perfectionist with a fatty... aim for 90% done at any one time and you will feel better... Thumbs Up Pete

Well, today, I’m pleased to report I made it into the field, into low range, back out of the field and back into high range whilst towing a trailer and didn’t need to get towed out of the field!

Proof that mine isn’t a Chelsea tractor and does get used as a Range Rover should!

Last time I had this one in the field with the trailer the transfer box packed in so driving under it’s own steam back onto the tarmac road today seemed like an achievement Laughing

That's great David, you had me thinking for a second or two, thinking we were back to where you started.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s been times I’ve cursed this one but it’s been a project I’ve enjoyed with a decent end result. Smile
