I changed the oil on mine in January/February when I got my car.

Unfortunately, I think I've bought a car that's lived in the city all of it's life and hasn't been changed between High and Low range as it seems to have grenaded itself when I switched to Low range.

I usually switch then between High and Low a couple of times a week when sitting at traffic lights or the likes just to keep everything moving. I'll keep doing it if it saves my transfer box!

The transfer box takes 1.5 litres of oil, I had half a litre left from February so I've just been to the local dealer to grab a litre of oil today so that I can get this back together tonight. Transfer box oil makes V-Power look cheap! Including VAT it was 29.96 a litre!!

One thing I have noted, auto boxes like Diesel engines look like you never changed the oil after a few miles, there are to many oil passages, cooler and lines plus the torque converter… these hold approximately 4 liters oil that doesn’t get changed with a simple pan off oil change.

The gearbox is around 100kg and the transfer box is around 40kg. With oil, they’re both probably just over 150kg combined.

I’m glad to say that the RR is back together, changing range and driving perfectly!



I fitted the new transfer box and then tried to clear all the codes so I coUtd recalibrate the transfer box. I was getting frustrated as it wouldn’t calibrate. Then it dawned on me I’d left the main loom unplugged from the gearbox as I’d unplugged it to avoid stretching it when dropping the box down slightly.

I reconnected it and then the calibration of the transfer box position sensor and clutches worked perfectly using my IID tool.

I’ve done 20 miles in it tonight and it’s driving perfectly. I’m a bit annoyed that I changed the gearbox as I’m not convinced mine was broken, however, the new box is much smoother then the old one despite it having had new solenoids fitted in January.

I took my brave pill and then switched it to Low Range and drove it for around 1/2 mile in Low Range too so I’m quite happy everything is working as it should now!

The transfer box arrived empty of oil but thankfully I’d been to the dealer and bought oil for it today. It takes 1.5 litres of oil and Land Rover only sell it by the litre for £29.96! Thankfully when I’d changed it in January I’d kept the last 1/2 litre so I only needed one bottle today!

Normal service has definitely resumed! I just need to drive it nicely for a few hundred miles to let the gearbox adaptions settle in again now!

I agree that oil is one hell of a price, I wonder why they dont sell it in 1.5L bottles or in 1/2L bottles.

Looking forward to seeing the inside of the transfer box.

Pleased the car is now back to full health.

I’ve just had the Range Rover for a run up the motorway as last night it was just A roads and B roads I took it on.

There’s a loud whining noise that’s coming from it that wasn’t there before all of this. I‘ve got a funny feeling it’s coming from the transfer box as it sounds like it’s emanating from the centre of the car.

I now need to decide if I can be bothered removing the transfer box for a 3rd time

That's really crappy luck man. Sleep on it for the night n think about it another time. Only good thing for you would be least you know how it all comes apart and should be a fairly easy job too take off now

I didn’t get time to phone them today as works been busy.

I took it out for a run this evening with the wife driving so I could crawl around putting my ear to things in the car. I’m pretty sure the noise isn’t the rear prop shaft so that leaves the transfer box or gearbox.

The noise is definitely coming from between the front seats, it’s worse when under load and quietens on overrun. Changing the gears manually from 6 - 5 - 4 doesn’t affect the frequency of the noise but it does sound a bit louder in 4th gear then it is in 5th gear and it’s louder in 5th then it is in 6th.

The gearbox came from a 2004 car that had done 93k miles, going by the stickers on the box and the date on the sump the gearbox was replaced in 2014 so it’s not very old and hasn’t done many miles. The gear change on it is beautifully smooth too so I don’t think it’s likely to be the gearbox.

If I was going to guess I’d say it’s definitely going to be the transfer box but I’m unsure how I can be certain and unless I’m certain I don’t want to change the transfer box again.

In a moment of madness I stuck the details into We Buy Any Car earlier, they offered me just shy of £8k for it so I’m sorely tempted to cut my losses and jump but I’ve done so much to it and come so far part of me doesn’t want to give up either.

That looks a great price from wbac, dont forget they nearly always drop the price when you get to the drop off centre, so I would say you may get 7500.
From what you've said on the forum before I think that would return you a good profit, so as you say tempting.

If it was me, I too am getting very attached to my SC, I would strip the transfer box you removed and see if it can be rebuilt, using the manual it looks quite straight forward.
At least that way you know the box you are putting back will be a good one.

From what I’ve spent on it doing all of the jobs I’ve done trying to make it perfect there’s not much profit in it at that but I wouldn’t be loosing anything either.

I’ve been looking at newer ones, L405’s, RRS SDV8, SC’s and SVR’s but the market prices are up hugely compared to 12 months ago and I’m not buying in whilst they’re inflated so I’m leaning towards repairing this one this evening now I’ve calmed down a bit.

Have just spoken to them about replacing the transfer box. Apparently they don't have another one so I've asked if I can return it and be refunded so that I can source another.

The lad on the phone didn't have authorisation to agree so I'm waiting for a call back from the boss.
