range rover with problems

Hi all
About 6 month ago, I was asked if I would look at a range rover, it has a rattle in the front of the motor.
I havent worked on cars for years and I said I would be wasting every ones time.
Last Sunday, the very same range rover pulled up on my lawn. I dont know anything about range rovers and I found it very interesting, as i Iooked over the vehicle.
It had a massive rattle in the front of the motor (not that I can see the front of the motor), so we went for a drive.
Motor and gear box seemed fine, I learned very quickly that it had no suspension at all and we could not get it to work. (There are no lights on the switch.)
When we got back, I took the radiator cap off and it was boiling, the gauge was on normal.
It must have been a lovely vehicle when new.
I have never been in to new cars, my present car is a merc 180E 1993 model
My first car was a MG J2
When they left, they had no car.
Well I had to buy it and I did.
Now I am trying to find out what it is.
I know
2005 range rover vogue
20in tires, six spoke wheels
Antenna on the roof
Vin sallmama35a------
What I would like to know (I cant find any land rover plate on the vehicle)
What engine has it got
What gear box has it got
What model is it (I have read about p38 I think and l322)
What diagnostic tool is best for this job(as I believe I need one)
What are your thoughts on the rattle from the front of the motor
What are your thoughts on the suspension and what is the procedure on checking out the problem
thanks for reading, hope you can help, thanks

you car with aerial on the top more than likely will be a facelift jag/ford engine unless someone has added it to fool others

do you have square front headlights with separate indicators or all enclosed?

I will also be listing a IID toll for sale shortly, I shipped some bits out to OZ a few weeks ago for another member

It's the L322 4.4 petrol with the BMW M62 engine.
My first thoughts regarding the rattle was to check the water pump. The bearings are noisy when they give up.

Reckon it's the 2005 BMW engine Lukie.

The BMW is a pretty bomb-proof motor and is vg to lpg. The chain guides get brittle in the hot temp it runs at (to meet eu emissions) so getting that done would save you a headache later on. Also a thermostat swap to a lower temp one should be high on your list (see member Haylands who has a lot if info on this). Also I would get all the filters and breathers changed - looks like it's had a dusty life!

Gearbox and transfer box oil change would be useful. Also check/change the radiator as they can fill with sludge at the bottom and this affects the oil transmission cooler.

Check the water pump (bearing can go any time)

Btw It has the MOST info system not the earlier canbus.

Hi Knares, welcome to the world of FF Ownership and welcome to the forum!

As said in other posts it's a 2005 model pre-facelift L322, with a 4.4 BMW Petrol engine, fitted with the Denso Touchscreen sat-nav unit and MOST fibre optic communications.

The engine rattle could be from the timing chain guides or possibly the water pump bearings.

The suspension problem could be one of a few things. Looking at the pictures the vehicle seems to be sitting very low. Is it riding on the bump stops? If so, this could indicate a failed (burst or leaking) airbag, probably one of the front ones, on the air suspension. You can get replacement airbags fairly cheaply from the internet, but make sure they're Delphi airbags (OEM Supplier) not Dunlop, as they're not as good. Don't go down getting LR Branded ones, as they'll cost a fortune. Also you'll need to check the air suspension compressor, located in the boot under the spare wheel. The piston rings can wear on the compressor and may need changing (again you can get the piston ring and o-ring repair kits off the web).

You'll need a good diagnostics tool to read and reset any fault codes. By far the best, as already mentioned, is the IID BT (Bluetooth) Tool from GAP Diagnostics, which can be used with an IPad or a lot of newer phones, much easier than reading everything from the dashboard display (especially if the dash display pixels have failed!).

The Search function on this Forum is excellent and any queries you have can often be solved from doing a search, but there's also hundreds of brilliant members on here who will gladly share their knowledge. Thumbs Up

I'm sure you've already considered it but is the battery in the key dead?
Before you do anything drastic, it might be worth changing the fob battery for the price of a couple of pounds (ok, dollars).

To late now but if you are ever unsure about a key put a screwdriver into the door locking pin then try the lock (don't rely on windows due to global locking)

If the key is going all the way in and turning 45 degrees maybe try some penetration fluid

My car would lock but not unlock turned out a previous owner had taken the lock out and the internal link to the lock had been turned

Try battery on remote but doubt it may need reprogramming

Last option find a cheap window, ideally one of the main windows as they are easier to replace, pop the window fingers crossed it's not dead locked
