4.4 TDV8 - Blown Turbo @ 50k miles

Hi All, my 2011 4.4 TDV8 went into to restricted performance yesterday and had to be recovered to a reputable specialist. I have been told it is likely that is has blown the large turbo and is a circa £3k bill to replace!

Once the car is turned off and then turned back on after a minute or so, the fault message is gone and the car will drive fine for a while with full power available and no apparent issues, until it comes back.

I would have thought that if the larger turbo had an issue then boost pressure/performance would be lost.

Car only has 50k miles and services every 6 months with top quality oils and has never suffered to knowledge oil starvation to the turbos.

I regularly rev the engine out and load it to ensure the second turbo is up to temp to avoid the known issues with limited used TDV8s.

Any ideas as to if it is likely to actually be the turbo?

Many thanks all.

Chris

The 4 rubber hoses on the inlet donut are are known issue, and can cause restricted performance.

Worth a check for splits.

Make sure that the secondary inlet isolation valve isn't sticking. It was redesigned to overcome this fault.
Note that the larger turbo is the primary, not the secondary, and the primary's own linkages can become sticky.

If it drives normally when reset then it’s not likely to be the turbo. More likely a boost leak.

Get them to do a smoke test on it to see if it has a leak somewhere. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

This is good advice, I would definitely get a second opinion before parting with £3k Rolling Eyes 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Could be a sticking turbo valve. This is located at the front of the engine and has been a known problem and there is an updated part for it.

Have a look here

I agree with all the input here -- I think we're collectively saying if it's a blown turbo 'they'll eat my hat' something is leaking or something is sticking Smile Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

It's quite easy "when you know how" to see if the CSOV mod has been done or not by looking down the front of the engine from just off centre towards passenger (UK) side. Use a torch. If it has the original "nut" fitting then first try and ease it loose as per the thread below with WD40 etc.

Typing "CSOV" into the Search function might bring up more. https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/search.php

Did you replace the 4 donut inlet ones for silicone versions?

PS Name and shame your so called specialist who's looking to pull a fast one here I reckon. He's simply throwing parts at it and not diagnosing it. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Guys, thanks very much for the comments. Currently awaiting the results of a smoke test. All 4 donuts were replaced with silicone about 2 months ago.

It does sound like something is sticking. For me, if the turbo has/has gone, then there simply wouldn’t be the performance available as soon as you restart the car.

There is also a missing of oil on the rear left hand donut if that sheds any further light on known issues?

Will keep you updated and massive thanks again.

Chris

Maybe a stupid question but if it is value/actuator then they can be replaced as isolated parts not requiring full replacement of the turbo, otherwise it's either going to be a full replacement of the entire system or the faults will just keep occuring as things stick?

Thanks.

The inlet manifolds have revised part numbers and an occasional original one has developed a split.
