I can see that quite a number on here do their own servicing. My car has had all the fluids done and is 10 years old. Currently I take the car to a good indie annually and as with a lot of indies they reference their price that they are cheaper than main dealers. I just got my sons car back from a service and it cost a hundred odd quid. What actually needs doing oil and oil filter, various air filters, maybe a fuel filter what am I missing something - what do they do for the other 300 quid I’m happy to take feedback that says I’m a penny pinching idiot, but I’m not I just don’t like wasting money. I seem to recall JLR have a scheme for serving older vehicles but my recent experience (admittedly with Audi) leads me to believe main dealers just have spotty faced “technicians” not experienced mechanics. Thanks Pete I have exhausted all of the JLR service sheets 10 years even though I haven’t done anything like the miles. I’ll continue to change the oil a couple of times between services. Geoff |

One benefit of doing it yourself is you put the “right” amount of oil back in to your preference

Yes mine only sucks out about 8.5 litres so I’ll put that much back in and top up as needed - thanks Geoff |

The 4.4 SDV8 is one of the easiest engines to service, in fact easier than many other cars (but Land Rover don't want you to know this).

Thanks to those who have contributed, I still think my vac pump maybe doesn't quite get to the bottom of the sump as it only extracts about 8L and I put 8L in and its full. But I know the guys at my local garage well so well that a while ago I provided the oil and they were happy, the did charge me 20 quid to change the oil but didn't suck it out but they drained it and it did take 9L. I suspect if I get all the bits they will be happy to do all the work - I'm unfortunately to creaky in myself to do it, maybe I should try oiling my knees and my back with a bit of fully synthetic 5W30W Geoff |

Draining vs sucking should extract the same amount as they are both extracting via the sump plug. What oil extractor are you using as my Draper Expert unit struggles to generate vacuum when nearly full and I used to do it in 2 goes. I've now moved to an electric pump which seems to be an even better solution. I always put in 9.5L to get the electronic level just above midway. Not sure why some take 8.5L to do this but maybe sludge buildup from previous extended oil drains has reduced the sump capacity or there are slight variations in the electronic guage calibration. I'd always prefer a slight overfill rather than an underfill give any uncertainty. Even though I do all my own servicing I like to get an indy specialist to do a yearly inspection as they can often pick up any issues I or the MOT miss as they know what parts are prone to fail. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

Guess it depends on how long you intend to keep it, on the other side of the coin, is a main dealer better than an independent 😂😂😂

@E500, I've recently P/Ex'd a 2014 L405 that had a perfect history like yours up to 2 years ago when I bought it and serviced it myself. The LR main dealer showed almost no interest in the history and was far more interested in the condition than the history, it certainly didn't hurt the value anything like the amount I've saved. My opinion is if you can do it yourself then do it unless there are any warranty risks. |

I've done my own work since I once got charged 15 years ago to fix an oil leak. Cost €1400 and still had the oil leak. Since that day I do all work that doesn't require specialist tools besides basic mechanics gear.

Interesting, but not surprising. Thanks for the reply. Re: knowing/trusting what's been done, totally agree. I work on my other cars as much as possible and always find some horrible bodge the first time I do something... |

So far I've done everything myself except the megaflush, coz a don't have the kit and I didn't fancy sitting under the car on ramps with the engine running with hot exhaust trying to check the g-box oil level and get the filler plug back in whilst hot oil is p***ing out everywhere.
