Replace ignition key shell and battery

Hi Everyone,

I just went through the ordeal of replacing the key shell and battery for the key to my 2009 L322.

After wasting time on a couple of shells that looked like the right one, but were not, I finally got the right shell and battery!

The only thing to remember is that the old key is glued shut which I assume means it’s waterproof (is it really?). The new shell just snaps together.

I bought the shell from here.

They offer two different styles of key blade. You can e-mail them a photograph of your key to make sure you get the right one! I thought I ordered the right one but since I was keeping my key blade, I actually needed the other one. In the e-mail you should specify if you will have the new blade cut at a local locksmith or if you’ll swap your original blade for the blank that comes with it.

They were really helpful and shipped quickly!

I also bought a new battery off of eBay. Don’t forget that it’s soldered to the circuit board! So, don’t try prying it out!

Here’s a good video that shows how to replace the battery once you have your key disassembled (VL2330).

And here’s a good video (made by the same people who sold me the shell) showing how to open your original key and swap the blade and circuit board.

Good luck!
