Buying a Merc ML:

The Mrs is having an ML next to replace her BMW 330D M sport. I'm quite chuffed, I've been trying to get her to like 4wds for ages, but LRs have never floated her boat, so an ML is better than nothing, or a 911. ( I need her to get the dog too sometimes)

She wants a less than one year old ML350 Sport. There's a few around. We had a new ML300 Grand Edition today. It's a £50k car, but doesn't feel it IMO.

Anyone know anything we should look out for? Under a year old is under warranty so fairly safe but are they any good? The 300 was gutless, but I am comparing it to mine which has about 113bhp more.

My Mrs has an ML320 sport, 2008.
They are solid, reliable cars with no real vices, however I hate it!
Its bland and boring, typical german interior, boring to drive but functional. Cant wait to get rid!
Just my opinion.

+1. Boring, bland and soulless. We spent a weekend in one prior to ending up in the FF and I couldn't wait to be shot of it. The interior is just awful and was not a nice place to sit for any length of time (unless you want a nap!) From what I've heard their pretty useless on anything but dry flat tarmac as well, not sure if that's an issue for your wife or not.

You are running the risk of putting her off 4x4's for life...

I would expect all FFRR owners to say these things and I agree, however it won't be my car and it's more practical for her, carrying the dog etc than on the back seat of the BMW.

I've learnt that fighting against these types of decisions ain't worth the bother!

I don't plan to drive it, why would I? I've got a Vogue SE!! (smug) Discovery 4 HSE

Well, a few years back I bought a ML320 Avantgarde (petrol, not the 320 CDI) and it lasted 11 months. I changed it for one of the last D2's.
Boring, hairdresser image, plasticky, yank built, sloppy handling silver POS. (do Merc do any other colour than silver??)
Rather have AIDS than another one of those.

Check out used residuals very carefully. You might get a shock. CAP say one thing but the reality is that nobody wants them used. Get the spec and then try offering it to another dealer on the QT Wink

Good pal of mine works as Merc Direct, They can't get rid of the things. Almost giving them away compared to new price. Also the same thing on the R class.

What's wrong with a Freebie-2 HSE ??? Vastly superior in every way. Or perhaps treat her to an Evoque?

Mundane, Excrement-Residual Cr4p. Nuff said.

the only ML worth buying is the ML 63 AMG! The other ones are utter crap... Got one for a week and it didn't even compare with the X5, not close to the RR! 2000 BMW M5, Avus Blue/LeMans Leather Interior

TBH, if it was a car for me, and I had a choice between the FL2 and the current shape ML, I'd go for the ML Shocked

The FL2 still feels like a cheap sub £20k car inside, its ALL plastic and following a format of trying to look similar to its bigger brothers. The interior is quite bland, nothing I find that exciting about it when I've been in them. Considering the prices of them are in the same range as the ML, at least the ML does feel and look a bit special. I mentioned the Evoque but its still too far away and new prices are too high.

It will never go offroad, its all about a practical mid sized 4wd that she feels comfortable in and I've learnt like all married men that instead of sticking your oar in and trying to persuade her into something else, if her choice IS a mistake, let her make it on her own! Discovery 4 HSE

I took the daughter to look at the ML , as i am trying to get her out of her Merc Cabriolet , and she was quite impressed by the shape ( as she put it ) not as boxy and dated looking as the FFRR Laughing
The interior she was very happy with as it was more or less the same as her own Merc ( least she knew where most of the controls where and what they did ) apart from the one that opens the bonnet Rolling Eyes

She won't go offroad so no need to take that into consideration , it has all the space inside that she needs and more , and as she also says it has a feminine look to it ( this from a 24 year old ) Laughing
All in all she was quite impressed by it , as i was with it's bigger brother the GL ....

On another note , the local tyre fitter guy that i know has one for his missus and she totally loves it , he told me he cannot get her to change to another model or marque ..

Although some say it's bland , boring and such like the same could be said about any car FFRR included ,
Also the new ML's don't seem to have as many unreliability issue's as cars nearly double the price ..... Whistle Whistle Whistle

I would also go for the ML over the Landrover Handbag (FL2) .... Thumbs Up
