No centre diff lock?

Not that I ran into a situation where I needed it exactly but just an observation, do the L322/Sport/D3/D4 not have a locking centre diff?, or they do but the car decides when they lock it not the driver.
Only wondered as I’ve driven other stuff before that you can lock it-Landcruisers, Shoguns even the Merc GL and RAV4!.
Land/Range Rovers are just as capable off tarmac as any of them so just wondered if they had one?.

Locks itself on the L322. It’s the locking rear diff that was optional.... standard on some models I think.

Do all L322's have an auto locking center diff? How does it know when to lock up? I have a locking rear and am curious how that knows also.

Even my 1989 classic had a viscous coupled centre diff....

Just for a demo...try putting some baking powder in a bowl of water.
Start to stir slowly at first... the bowl stays still... but the faster you stir.... ie wheel spin etc.. the bowl starts to turn as the “ viscous couples “

Depends on the transfer box,

The 02-06 years had a New Venture NV225 transfer box with a torsen differential, which does not allow full locking,

The 06-> had the manga steyr DD295 which have a “normal” differential and clutch packs which let the diff fully lock up.

I always assumed that these open lock symbols would change to a closed lock symbol in the event that the diff actually activated.
Not sure what year your cars are and what display you have but for ref. mines a MY2011.

(Attempted to post 2 pics of my 4x4 display in car.. Don't seem to be able to upload them to my reply, but if you click my gallery they're there to have a quick look at 👍)

They turn orange when locked, iirc, you have a dd295 centre box which will fully
Lock up, but only when needed, you also have a rear locker, which again will only lock up when needed.

Should be pretty good off road with that.

I have seen the icons turn a different colour, but it did take a fair bit of slippage to get it to react. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Even if you don’t have a rear locking diff, you will still have the padlock symbol on your 4x4 display, but it will never change colour to indicate it’s locked.....

Never saw the rear lock symbol on mine Mark. Only the centre. Never had cause to use rock crawl tho.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sure I read somewhere that’s it’s still shown... just to confuse us...

Manual doesn’t really help as to whether it’s still shown if not fitted....

I don’t think my 4x4 info display even has the locks on it but I will have a look later, it’s an early 2007 TDV8.
I know it doesn’t make much difference most of the time I just thought it a bit odd how Land Rover don’t give the driver the choice of being able to lock it where most other 4x4s do.
Still I suppose terrain response is a bit more advanced than stuff in other cars the same age when it came out.
I used to have an early Cayenne Turbo which had centre and rear lockers iirc.

They found that people used them too much and then not when needed... Use them when not needed and you can easily damage part of the system, forget to lock them when you do need it and the pictures get on youtube showing a Rangie off at it's worse!!

Much better to have a system that means it is always there when you need it...

Don't forget to use your low range once a month, just put it in low box, drive a few yards then put it back into high... use it frequently and it will still be there when you need it.... While I'm on about it, don't forget to exercise the air suspension, up to off road, down to access mode a few times... Thumbs Up Pete

Had a mess about with the screen earlier, seems mine has locking and rear locks available, only shows up in rock crawl though.
I don’t know why it’s rotated the image when I uploaded it,sorry.
