On my RHD car , the knocking was a single occasional knock e
When I started turning the steering wheel in a different direction when around straight ahead, also associated with an 5 or 10mm of steering wheel "free play" - as the rack moved up or down in the housing - which could be felt everytime.
The play was very obvious when underneath the car if holding the rack through the rubber gaiter while someone turned the steering wheel a quarter turn (or less) right to left and back (engine on).
You could feel ithe rack moving up and down in the housing by 2 or 3mm Paul,
