The 2010 / 2011 MY cam chain issue

Hi all, just wanted to get a feel for how many of the 2010 / 2011 MY V8 petrols do actually have to have their cam chain tensioners replaced. My gut feeling says not a lot but that is not worth much.

So who on here has had this issue and had their chain tensioners etc. replaced or knows someone who had?

Thanks, Eugene MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Mine was slightly noisy and I had it done proactively as if a chain does jump a tooth it can be catastrophic so as I plan to keep the car for a while I factored that in to the purchase price and now I have peace of mind.

I could hear mine was slightly noisy so I had it all replaced, to make sure it was right.

It was only on around 50k miles at th time.

When it was stripped down, 1 of the tensioner assemblies was quite worn, the one on the other bank was hardly worn at all. Obviously I had it all replaced, new chains etc.

I had a warranty on the vehicle at the time which paid a reasonable chunk of the bill.

As far as I'm aware mine hasn't been done yet at circa 79k I think (haven't driven it much lately for obvious reasons, so I forget it's exact mileage!), and isn't making any suspicious sounds.

I plan to keep the vehicle long term (2.5 years in already), so might well get it done proactively at some point as a routine piece of maintenance, although all the specialists I've spoken to about it suggest you'll highly likely hear it start to degrade before it becomes a serious problem. There could of course be a catastrophic failure though, as with anything!

Mine has done just 100k miles (166k kms) and I have completed the diff, gearbox and transfer case oil (and gearbox filter) changes and I'm looking at whether the cam chain is such a big problem statistically. Does anyone know.

I can't hear the characteristic chain rattle that I know from other engines, but I am also not used to the direct injection clatter, so I have no idea whether I even have a problem yet. I did try to get my endoscope in through the oil filler but no luck sofar, i.e. couldn't get to the cam chain on the passenger side.

I tried feeling the tension on the chain by pushing on it through the filler hole, it felt tight but no idea how tight is should feel to start with!!!

I think I have a way of solving the problem myself, without forking out 1000s on the kit and tools but I don't want to do the work if it is not needed.

Does anyone know where I could find the statistics and diagnostics, other than just sounds???? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Just curious, do jags with the 5.0 have this issue too?
and if so does it affect NA and supercharged?
. Cheers, Greg

AFAIK all 5.0 ltr engines suffer as well as the same year 3.0ltr.

As to how many suffer, the answer seems to be all of them have the problem it just depends when it shows itself, you can only hear it with the bonnet open which is why some have catastrophic engine failure because if you never open the bonnet with the engine on you won't know...

The first picture shows the issue, there is a hardened steel pin that pushes against the tensioner, on the original, the top one in the pic, the pin has worn that hole, when the tensioner was new it was the same over its entire length, the pin, which is controlled by oil pressure, smashes it to bits until the tensioner doesn't tension and then the cam chain jumps and grenades the engine...

These picture came from one with less than 70,000, I have heard of them being noisy from 40,000 upwards,

I think it is how the vehicle is used, lots of town driving and it will degrade sooner, as you get off tickover the oil pressure is enough to keep a constant pressure on the tensioner so long motorway drives don't have the same effect.

The cure was to change the angle of the oil fed piston, hence the different position of the hardened steel disc inserted in the new tensioner to prevent any further problems...

The second picture shows how much you have to remove to fix the problem..

This is the idea. I am convinced this works as it is the same type of modification JLR did to theirs. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I asked about this at my garage shortly after I got mine and they told me it’s not that common and they’d never actually replaced one. They appear to be a well respected specialist (Rovertune) and I’ve always felt confident that they know what they’re talking about. But then I read what knowledgeable people on here say and can’t help but feel a little anxious. 2011 5.0 S/C

Yeah, I'm anxious too as I don't hear the signs but am afraid I may be missing it.

First thing is to get a feel for how high the percentage is, not that it says anything about each of our specific cars but it does give us a probability.

I doubt whether JLR will ever publish such info though........

Anybody hear how the class action lawsuit in the US about this turned out? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Similarly to Jomo, I've asked the various trusted LR specialists I use, and whilst they've all heard of the issue none have ever actually needed to do this job, and overall it seems to be a pretty rare thing. Sadly no actual stats to back that up.

Whilst the 5.0 S/C in an RR is relatively rare in the UK compared to the 4.4 TDV8, if it was a very common problem I think you'd see more across the wider JLR range using this engine.

But clearly it can happen, and can be a disaster, and so we all have sleepless nights dreaming of timing chain tensioners Smile

If you do a google search for "Jaguar 5.0" or "Range Rover 5.0", timing chain issue is the third most popular on both...!!

I do think it's more of a case of when rather than if, and I bet we see an increase as the engines get older... Big Cry Pete
