Possible Alternator failure

Out to shops today and on way back got a screeching noise from engine, sounded like a belt slipping but worse. Came and went a few times. No warning lights, seemed to be engine speed related opposed to drivetrain (put in neutral and rev’d engine). Got home ok and had it idling on drive to pop the bonnet. One mighty screeching noise and the car stalled! I could start it again but this time battery charge light on and continued screeching. Turned off. Then thought I better move it to better part of drive but it wouldn’t start. Iidtool faults read low voltage errors all over the place. Battery 11V.

So does it sound like Probable alternator failure? A seized water pump wouldn’t do that? The paperwork when I got it said it had been done with radiator a few months ago.

M62 4.4 V8 petrol Engined 2004MY. No gas or alterations.

Cheers

Yep, sounds familiar. When the alternator seizes, it will stall the engine. Had this on my 4.4. It may have flat spotted the belt so I’d replace both if it is the alternator.

Thanks for the reply. Did you replace it yourself? And did you replace tensioners too?

I presume there is a wiki how to.

Download the workshop manual from WIKI, it's in there, not too bad a job, change the idlers if they feel rough or are noisy at all when you spin them, check the water pump, mine had play after the alternator seized so I changed it anyway... Have fun.. Pete

Sounds definitely like the alternator.

There's a good thread on here on how to replace it, not "difficult" as such just bloody awkward at times.

I did mine a few weeks ago (TDV8) using the replacement thread. I guess yours may be different. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Got the old alternator out, very hard to spin so seems to be a duff bearing.

Random question. The two pulleyed hydraulic tensioner that comes out to give access to the alternator I presume it should have some tension in it?

It’s this pulley system. https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/pqr00017...6868-p.asp

Does the ‘piston bit’ need pushed together or something.

No, it should push all on it's own and put resistance on the belt... Pete

Ah, so is it more like a dampener? Both the top bracket and bottom assembly either side of the hydraulic cylinder pivot freely. When on the engine the top pulley wheel is at a fixed point but the assembly with the second wheel can rotate on that axis point.

I can’t picture how the tension gets into the pulley, unless the belt needs to be on, and the wheels counter each other.

TBH it was a few years ago I changed one... both the wheels were rough on mine, the damper does something to tension but exactly what I can't remember...!! Sorry.. Pete

Thanks Pete. The bearings on the pulleys seem fine. As long as it’s all meant to move freely when off the car and then physics makes it tension when the belts on that’s good enough for me.
