Air suspension...Again

Hi,
sorry, I can't find what I am looking for, but that might be my fault.
My 2010 RR Vogue TDV8 has gone lame on me. I haven't used the vehicle for a few days, what with the lock-down and when I looked at her, I realized that she looked like she had lowered herself on all for corners. I started the vehicle and got an orange suspension fault warning, but she raised herself just fine.
I drove to the supermarket without any issues, but when I returned and started it again, it raised itself to the off road level and kept doing it until something burst. (I guessed it couldn't see that the system was set for normal road level).I hope a pipe popped off and not the actual airbag, but I cant see what has happened yet. The vehicle had to be limped back, as there was no air in the system full-stop, but it was occasionally trying to raise itself, until I got the red suspension warning and warned not to exceed 30mph.
Obviously, it has never sunk on its suspension before and never over-pumped, so please could someone point me in the right direction to resolve the issue?
Faulty valve causing the initial problem before the over inflation?
Many thanks
Lee

My guess would be a minor leak started it off, the car drops and a new part of the wheel height sensors comes into play, this is probably dirty so there is little electrical imput to the suspension ECU, the fatty thinks it is constantly too low so pumps up, sorry to say but it is usually the bags that burst, around the fold of the air bag...

You could try washing up liquid and water everywhere and see if you can find the leak if it will fill the system, otherwise send it to a garage....

Good Luck Pete

Agree, most likely an air spring (typically one of the front ones) has sprung a leak/hole around the fold. Several of us have had that lately around the 8-10 year old mark...

That's what happened with mine a few months ago, and the rest of the system lowers itself a fair amount to compensate.

I'd get a torch out and have a good look and feel to see if you can find anything.

If you do need to replace, a fairly simple job if you have some basic tools, assuming the knuckle bolts come out easily.

Details of my swap here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic54196.html . Given your model year, it has the CVD dampers, so a pair of them is circa £800.

also check the orientation of the height sensors, if it has over extended itself its possible one has become inverted the wrong way round and is giving a spurious reading.

the bang is probably a bag going pop at top ride height. see if you can get it to raise up and get in amongst the wheel arch with some soapy spray to look for a leak. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi,
thanks for the reply. I have been in there digging and found that I do have a large split on the Right hand front airbag. The left looks OK. I will have to replace the pair though. Hopefully by replacing them both, it will resolve the issue over going down and then over-inflating etc.
It seems that some cars were fitted with, or without VDS for 2010 models.
I assume that I have right height sensors that means I have VDS?
Just so I know what position "normal" is for these sensors, I don't suppose you know?
Thanks
Lee

dont have a pic of normal sorry but they should be pointing the same way if that makes sense. A diagnostic tool should be able to tell if there is a discrepancy in the readings and one of the sensors is duff tho.

I would imagine that replacing the strut would fix the problem.

best practice to replace both as the bags are both the same age etc though when I had one on my 12 go pop LR just did one side. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thank you.
I will replace them both
sorry, one numpty last question. If I have the sensors, which I do, that DOES mean that I have VDS fitted doesn't it?
I don't want to order the wrong parts etc.
Thanks
Lee

All air suspension cars and Fatties have height sensors, it has nothing to do with VDS, that controls damping not ride height...! Pete

Censored .
Thanks for the reply.
How do I tell if my vehicle has VDS, or not ?
I do have a metal weight bolted on top of the strut and it has the wires that are always breaking going into it.
Thanks
Lee

Sorry, not up on the controls of the later cars... maybe ask the dealer, they can tell from your VIN... Pete

OK. Thanks.
I wanted to take advantage of a 20% sale I found on the Aerosus website and order before it runs out tomorrow. That's where I found that 2010 models seem to be fitted with and without VDS.
Cheers.

If you have wires going into the top of the strut then you have Adaptive Dynamics (VDS) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
