Trailer Breakaway cable on deployable bar

Hi, first time towing with our L405 and electric deployable bar today. Was looking for somewhere safe to put the trailer breakaway cable couldn’t see anywhere other than a loop on side of actual bar. L322 had loops on armature and the D4/5 had loops too. Is there another place for it? The manual doesn’t help.

Looping it around the ball seems to be the only option.

The above comment about the carabiner type clip is wrong.

The spring type clip can only be used when clipping back onto the cable, a carabiner clip can be used either clipping back onto the cable or directly onto a designated attachment point on the tow vehicle.

From 2018 all caravans are to be equipped with a breakaway cable with a carabiner end.

The eye on the side of the bar is for the breakaway cable. Looping round the ball is not advised as the weak point is the neck of the ball. I did find that i needed a shorter breakaway cable to stop it dragging on the ground.

I just went to take a look - I don't know what I was remembering, but you're right - there is an eye on mine Rolling Eyes

My trailer is a US one with crossover cables - so I'm still missing the L322 which had a US receiver with points either side for the chains.

Hi, mine is a Carabiner and that’s the loop I used for it. Thumbs Up

I usually prefer to have it on something that isn’t the bar it’s self, as you say if it fails all bets are off.

Thanks for the that.

DON'T loop it round the ball hitch - if the ball fails the cable could spring off & not apply the brakes.

The breakaway cable must be attached to something either provided for that exact purpose or the towbar structure itself.

The wombles are taking a more active interest in trailers thesedays (especially with the possibility of registration/testing for braked trailers). 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Off topic, but registration & testing of trailers makes a lot of sense.

I bought a boat from a dealer in Germany - he was going to send me the papers to register the trailer in my name - he couldn't believe that I could just turn up, slap my car registration plate onto it, drive off and never have it checked ever again.

MOT for your car, but not your caravan doesn't make much sense when you think about it.
