EGR Leak/Replacement 4.4 TDV8

Hi all,

Thought I´d again ask the wisdom of the forum;

Has anyone replaced or repaired an EGR valve on a 4.4 TDV8?

My car is currently with the mechanic and striped away from inlet manifolds etc.

He has quoted me 11 hours of labour to remove and replace the EGR, replace the 2 gaskets on the oil cooler, replace the o-rings on the oil feed pipe and put everything back together

Does this sound reasonable?

cheers! RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Has nobody had an EGR replaced on a 4.4 TDV8?

Asking not so much for myself anymore, only this seems to be an uncommon fault? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Goedemorgen, kan je helaas niet helpen, maar misschien krijg je eerder antwoord als je "EGR replacement" toevoegt aan je titel. Overigens lijkt anderhalve dag werk me wat ruim bemeten.

It's not a common failure jackie-o

Mike (Baltic Blue) has a thread with the most common 4.4TDV8

Note my thread which clarifies issue and fix for this error code
P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic50202.html

You might want to check that out because the error code is for the EGR but that sensor (Sensor A) is nowhere near the EGR.

11 hours for your job does sound a bit high because access is all from the top.

. Cheers, Greg

jackie-o: Sorry, cannot help you with the EGR labour time, but, having car OCD I would consider replacing your oil cooler rather than replacing just the gaskets. Simply because all the time and labour to do your EGR and if in the future your oil cooler fails, then that's a 4.5 hours job just on it's own. I had the dreaded oil cooler leak [whether it was just the gaskets I don't know] but the local Indy changed the oil cooler itself [genuine LR]. Total job came to £700. If I had put my foot down & said "just change the gaskets" I'm sure they would have but we chose to do the complete job. Think a genuine LR oil cooler is around £300 +/-

You've got enough expense on your hands without some clown popping up saying "change your oil cooler" but hey ho, we're all different. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

@fox889; makes complete sense what you are saying. The only thing that makes me reluctant is that no one seems to have an issue with the actual cooler breaking, its always the gaskets...but maybe you´re right and it´s worth just changing the whole thing...

@Robert, bedankt and done

@ GGDR thanks for the directions, these threads/guides really are amazing. In my case tho the whole problem stems from an boost air leak traced to the EGR. They are changing the gaskets either side but they also suspect the valve is faulty and will know one they have the whole thing out and apart.

Aside from o-rings and oil cooler gaskets; are there more things I should change while they have everything apart? The 4 short hoses from the inlet manifold seem to be a given. What about CSOV or other pipes/hoses?

Or better to wait until things actually break?

@ kevinp; These are 30 gbp each from LR so gbp 120 for all four...you do mean the 4 short hoses from the air intake manifold right? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Yes mate. I just cut the hose into 4 x 56mm lengths using the jubilee clip as a guide to cut it square.

Another small update on this;

Hopefully the EGR is fine after all. The indy has found an air leak coming from a pipe going from the oil separator to the oil filter housing and this is apparently leaking air?

Does anyone know what he is talking about? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

@Craig; thats pretty much what he said too...

The theory is now that the leak is coming from a steel pipe going from the EGR (couldn't understand exactly which one)

He has tried looking with a a camera but it´s too tight to see anything and the whole thing now needs to come out which apparently is a real PITA Sad

The saga continuous... RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

So a small update for those interested.

EGR and a lot of other stuff now out and it turn out the EGR was bad as well as the pipe leading back to the inlet manifold.

All parts arrived today and the mechanic is very much looking forward to putting it all back together again.

According to him, apart from turbo replacement , this is pretty much the worst job you can do on this engine...
