I'm locked out and have no spare key.

Hello all,

Because of the fact that my keys are sitting on the rear cargo mat in plain sight with the vehicle locked, I've got a decision to make. It looks like I have no choice but to break one of the rear windows. There are a handful of L322s at the local yards, so I have replacement glass available.

What glass is less labor intensive to replace? The front door glass, rear door glass or the smaller vent window glass? The vent glass I guess is glued/bonded from what I've read. I've seen plenty of door glass replacement videos, but I can't find any information on replacing the vent glass, so I don't know what's involved.

Which one is getting broken?

Or you could just call in your local locksmith. Any decent one would get the door open in a jiffy with no damage. Mike - MPx

Call triple A I think it is in the US, people are always locking themselves out of their cars and would take them very little time in getting one of the doors open for you.

If a glass has got to go, front door for sure, apart from the mess you could have that swapped out in less than an hour. Rear doors really confined and not much space to work in.

3/4 panel is bonded in, it would take ages to replace that, i.e. you'd literally have to chip away at the bonding to get rid of all the debris and then pay a specialist to fit the new one. Would be much harder to get a new piece of glass as generally I don't think they bother to try to recover these.

Enjoy the solitude Thumbs Up

It's very possible I will do this if I can't get to it myself.

Good advice about the front glass and not the rear door because of ease of working on it.

I read your message, thanks for that. I'm going to try what you suggested in a few days once I have all the tools necessary. Yes, I'd prefer not breaking any of my windows...

Good luck, it's a 5 minute job, literally. Thumbs Up

First time I got locked out, I stupidly broke the quarter glass and the shop had to tear the whole door frame apart to replace it.
Second time I got locked out was on my driveway but during covid lockdown. Dealership quoted me €550 and a 3 month wait for a new key Laughing
Later that year I was able to get a spare, aftermarket key for €120 which I have been using since.

VS322, please PM me with the method. (The OP has asked the same question on RangeRovers.net)

If the car is locked with a fob, the central locking button is disabled, the door pull handles are disabled, and the door locking snib is disable.

I know this from trying it a few days ago on my 2003 L322 which, unlike the P38A, superlocks with the first push of the fob button. Ron B. VK2OTC

Ahh, thank you very much. I once left my keys on the loadspace cover and slammed the tailgate down when I was camping a couple of hours from home..

Fortunately, I'd left the windows slightly cracked open so was able, with a stick, to extract my wallet which was sitting in the top of my partially open camera bag and lift it to the top of the window.

In my wallet was the plastic emergency key.

You're most welcome! Both times I got locked out much the same way with you. Unfortunately the emergency key did not come with the vehicle. Spare keys (or lack thereof) among other things did make for a good haggle though Wink

Getting a metal flat key cut would be a good idea. Yes, the alarm will go off when one opens the door but at least one is in and can open the bonnet to disconnect the battery.

I don't know the backup sounder will still go off if the battery is disconnected. I've never tried it but I will one day. Ron B. VK2OTC

I called the dealer. The parts guy said that the "emergency key" is only available two ways. Either with a new vehicle, or with the purchase of a complete lock set ($1600 at the local dealer). I guess that isn't an option then.
