Restricted Performance

Hi guys, I need you help, if possible, I have had the yellow DPF light come whilst driving so straight away tried to get above 50 mph to get it to regen, no joy as I was on a country road, so yellow quickly turned to red.

Limped home and plugged in iid tool and with no surprise very high soot reading and fault code to match, no other new or stored faults codes appeared. So manage to get the DPF cleaned and reset faults.

When out for a spin gave it some wellie and the following happened -

Restricted Performance With the following fault codes -

P1247 Turbocharger boost pressure low
P244B DPF differential pressure too high Bank 1

So for the first code I will check the turbo actuator to see if it’s stuck or jammed, but Iam stumped as to what to check for the second code.
I have also has a low pressure smoke test done to check for any leaks on the intake side but nothing was apparent.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thumbs Up

It’s nearly always a boost leak, even though you’ve had a smoke test, you really need a good eyeball + white tissue check around every hose and union starting with the four donut hoses. You’re looking for soot escaping which the tissue will show. If you can get a high pressure smoke test it may show up but the low pressure just can’t pressurise the system enough. Search ‘donut hoses’ + ‘restricted’ - common issue but thankfully (hopefully) usually a simple fix. On mine for example a circlip gave up. Bent the clip, cleared the code and sorted.

.

. Cheers, Greg

Thanks GGRD, would a boost leak cause high soot levels in the DPF ?

I do have a little oil leaking from the plastic intake section connectiing to the butterfly valve, when we smoke tested it we did wiggle it around, a lot, but no smoke escaped, also I have found a little oily dirt on the bottom of one of the donuts.

Yes definitely. These intake leaks will create too much soot and fill your DPF

Mine is here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic52807.html

Do you mean the throttle body? Mine was the joint between the throttle body and the pipe form the intercooler. Was leaking die to the circlip coming loose.

. Cheers, Greg

Number one fault in my 4.4 tdV8 fault log.
You definitely need to fix any air leaks on the intake.
Changing the 4 short hoses is your first job.

As above, get a high pressure leak test done.
Do you have the original 4 thin Censored intake hoses on the doughnut?
The updated ones look like this with big jubilee clips.

Dr Rob, I do indeed still have the original rubbish donuts on there so I will change them all while it’s off the road.

GGDR, how did you clear your red DPF warning, as just going for the test drive after having the DPF cleared, my soot levels are very high again. Shocked

There are a lot of snake oil DPF fixers out there, in my opinion and experience you need the DPF off the car and in a machine like a "flash" machine.

That's how they do commercial DPFs, London busses for example.

But for now I would focus on finding the boost leak.

The DPF may be ok and if you get into a cycle of normal use should settle down.

. Cheers, Greg

Ah OK, it seems that the sensors are reporting a high pressure differential which means either a) one or both sensors are faulty or b) the DPF is again blocked. BMW i3 Electric Car

Pop the kettle on, it's quite a long read if you go through all the cha after the main first section.
