I've got a bit of an iffy wifi room, of course furthest from the router.

Since I have an old BT Home Hub 3 lying around, I googled "bt home hub 5 as wireless repeater"

and there are plenty of search results....

But these all seem to require a cable from the primary router/hub.

Searched but can't seem to find if I can I do it just on wireless?

Or do I need another black box of some type?

Wireless repeaters are generally not very reliable. Is there any way you can get a cable a bit closer to the problem room than the current access point?

What type is your primary access point? Ubiquiti do a long range version which is good although I've now changed to Mikrotik. Repositioning the main AP and replacing it with a dedicated model may solve the problem. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Connect your two routers over you power cables.
For example, get the devolo dLAN 1200+ Powerline Starter Kit. Plug one in to your main router via Ethernet, the other to your secondary router via Ethernet. Yes, your secondary router will need to be in repeater mode, specifically disable DHCP and stuff. I can’t remember the settings, but you’ll find them.

Performance will depend on the quality of your cabling, but you will get at least some signal to your old Hub 3. The reason I suggest devolo is their reliability, they can stay up for months without needing a reboot. In my experience other brands are noticeably inferior.

I use the same method to give me WiFi in the garage......BT WiFi extender.

Seems I can get a single unit repeater like the above which picks up the existing wifi, then relays it on.

or I can go with a power line set up with a plug in at one end and another plug in at the other end?

The one I have may not be around anymore, but I plug one part into the wall socket and connect an rj45 ethernet cable to it from the router and in the garage have another unit plugged into the wall giving a WiFi signal to the garage and outdoors.

I think it was called the BT ethernet WiFi extender 500.

There's a piece of software you can download from BT that lets you manage the setup.

PS to use a repeater, you would need to be on the edge of you WiFi signal to have something to repeat. With the ethernet over power, you can have WiFi wherever your mains reaches. Be aware though, both the source and receiver units need to be on the same mains circuit, so if your buildings have different power sources, this solution may not work.

PPS looking at the BT site Greg, I think the extender 600 is closer to my setup. I think you'd be hard pressed to get a more powerful transmitter without a licence as the emitted power (eirp) is controlled by regulation, otherwise every provider and their dog would be selling high power transceivers.

I've previously used the Netgear equivalents of that BT Wireless Extender in multiple houses to successfully extend coverage where it was patchy before. Not quite as good as a proper wired extension or using the mains power cables, but they worked well enough for us.

We've now completely changed the setup in both the houses, so not using them anymore. Not sure I'll be in central London this week at all, but if you happen to pass Canary Wharf you're very welcome to one, as they are just sitting on a shelf!

Another option to consider is mesh WiFi which is designed to use a back channel to extend the WiFi range.

Ultimately it depends what speed / reliability you hope / need to achieve. I have 300Mbps connection so i spent a lot of time trying to ensure I could make best use of it in areas where I most needed it.

Powerline ethernet in my house was just too slow but that may be down to my wiring as I have an old cottage which had been extended so the wiring is a bit of a mix.

One central AP and another on the front of the house gives me a high speed connection almost everywhere. I get > 100Mbps in my garage office. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

My broadband is around 450mps (copper)

My wiring is all new, 5 years ago so hope that should work ok.

I don't want to have to switch wifi on devices but these TP-Link ones seem to have wifi cloning.

I'll be interested to know how you get on. The speeds quoted on the box for those AV line adapters are laughable. Best case I was getting about 20Mbps. My fibre modem is on a spur though which probably has a detrimental effect. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

I recommended devolo powerline kit for a reason... use TP-link if you want to compromise reliability for price. Not worth it in my experience.

I no longer use powerline stuff, I ran Ethernet throughout my place under the floors etc and have a Ubiquiti UniFi network in every room, plus outside on the patio etc. It’s brilliant, but totting it up I think I spent a grand just on the UniFi kit in the end!! It was a labour of love.

But I gifted my devolo kit to my mother and it continues to provide rock solid connectivity, which is importance in my absence... I can’t be there every week or two fixing things. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I'm not sure this does 'cloning' as the TP-Link says. Which is repeating login/network name/password as I don't want to have to switch networks as we move around the house.

I've read through all the info (even the manual ) for Devolo but can't see any mention of this.

Or do they all do that?

Also unsure why I need (up to) 1200 mps if my copper broadband is only 450 ?

I do have a NAS to pipe movies to all the TVs so I realise that is something I may need speed over and above 450 for.
Also future-proofing.

Any tips on these finer points really appreciated.
