Towing bliss

After towing for 15 years with a Ford Explorer, plenty of power but agricultural rear suspension, and a Hyundai Santa fe, coped well but found it tedious changing gear, I towed with my new to me Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 tdv8 that's just clocked 100,000 miles.
After a bit of apprehension about what the caravan was doing, because I could hardly feel it was there, which I found a bit disconcerting to start with, I finally relaxed and just let it get on with it. It was so relaxing not having to manually change gears because I have back and knee problems.
More than happy with the 27.1 mpg just on A and B roads whilst towing. [Explorer did 18mpg] [Santa fe did 28mpg].
I have a 2017 Lunar Clubman SR [1500kg] but would love the Delta TR now I have the ultimate towing machine if Santa is listening!!

Thanks for the comments. Just out of interests sake, when I had the gearbox oil changed at a ZF specialist, when I tow the caravan they advised me to use the sports mode when going slowly through villages to help the torque converter from excessive slipping and getting to hot. I didn't find the need to use it, even though sometimes the revs were barely above 1200rpm. It didn't feel strained and readily changed down a gear and just felt smooth.

^^ I think that is because sports mode will chose 1st gear if needed whereas the D will set off in second unless you manually select 1.

so it makes sense to use S, or simply select 1 with the paddles for steeper hill starts. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I thought ours pulled away in 2nd but actually I've been monitoring gears selected and engaged and it downshifts through the gears as you slow all the way to 1 then up again from 1 from standstill. This is in D not S
.

When a trailers connected to ours there is a noticeable change in the way the gearbox shifts and the engine behaves. When the tow bar was first fitted I tested it straight away, before coding the vehicle it wasn’t until it was coded that there was a noticeable change in the way it drove. Presumably it’s clever enough to adapt when a trailer is connected, so I wouldn’t have thought S was required?

I have only towed the caravan a few times, but agree we have the 3.6 and it’s absolute bliss, you could easily forget it was hooked up!
