So first issue with my new purchase that I'm going to tackle. 2004 vogue with the BMW style infotainment.

On collection yesterday I notice the navigation wasn’t working, the screen was working via the TV modules output and the radio worked for 2 hours no issues. The PO has replaced Yil000023 which I think is the tv tuner (listed as entertainment module?) ? Blue and white plug with two antenna. The original (which came with the car) has some water damage. On getting home I thought I’d see if I could get the navigation to work so I disconnected and reconnected it. The power light came on and it started up using the navigation computer’s display out put and all was fine. With the screen now working, navigation knew where we were and displayed the map and the radio was working. Locked the car and left it overnight.

Today I’ve come to use it and the display is blank, the backlight comes on and the radio worked for a few minutes and stopped. Turning the head unit off and back on (left knob) would return the sound for a few minutes. On first inspection in the boot I noticed that the nav drive did not have the red power light.

Unplugging the nav computer and plugging it back in again causes it to start up properly and the display to work and the radio then works fine for as long as required.

Once the car has been locked and it’s gone to sleep, red light goes off as it should but when starting the car again the navigation computer does not wake up unless I unplug and plug it back in again.

So my question is, is YIL000023 the tv tuner? It’s plugs I believe will fit the navigation computer and we can do away with analogue TV? (Is that correct?) or should I just get another analogue TV tuner and try that? Can I at least temporarily plug the navigation computer into the two connectors for the entertainment module/TV Tuner?

Also what wakes the navigation computer up? Does the entertainment module/TV tuner instruct it to start up? Or despite it working perfectly once manually started is it still at fault for not starting up when the car is unlocked?

I have tried to search for a schematic of the DSP system in a Vogue and as far as I can understand there is the Screen, BM54 as the radio module, MK3 Navigation computers, the DSP amp and the entertainment module/TV tuner. Is that it? Or are there more components in the system? Does anyone have a diagram of what is connected to what? 2005 E60 M5

Have you tried the blue connector from the tv tuner into the back of the nav unit to see if the screen works? If it shows the menu screen and keeps that it’s probably the tv tuner that’s gone.
I bought a working tv tuner thinking mine had gone but found out it was cos I hadn’t installed a relay for my reverse camera so lost the menu screen.

I haven't as yet as the weather is less than idea for sorting the issue.

So would I take the blue and white plugs from the TV tuner into the navigation computer or just the blue one?

To be honest I'd be more than happy to loose the tuner as its analogue anyway. I have ordered another on ebay for £20 (bargain!) to try.

The screen and computer work perfectly if I manually start up the navigation computer and get it going by replugging it. It just doesn't wake up automatically when the car is unlocked. 2005 E60 M5

Take just the blue plug from the tv tuner and plug into the back of the nav unit and it should work, not sure how long for as I only tested mine for a few mins.
If it is the tv tuner playing up then your eBay bargin might pay off! Have you checked the blue plug and socket on the tv tuner for any corrosion? Did read on another site of someone having to splice a new plug and loom together to get it working. 2004 Autobiography TD6 Java Black

A pet hate of mine is where threads regarding weird issues like this are never updated so here goes.

It turns out whilst the activity light was going off on the navigation computer the faint red glow from the eject button was not going off, and it should have been. this basically means that whilst the navigation computer would start up OK it wasnt managing to shut down properly. Ergo the car could not wake it up properly.

The issues with this means that the DSP AMP can't see the nav computer after the car starts up, so it helpfully decides to turn the radio off. It also means the nav computer is draining the battery. Obviously the hard reset, unplug, replug etc did make it burst back into life so the MK3 does actually work OK but its clearly not a full shilling.

Having removed the nav computer the TV unit took over the display (it does take a couple of starts without the nav computer present for it to decide to take over) and the radio was no problem again.

This set me on a path of finding a replacement navigation computer and whilst the MK3 is repairable and original a MK4 DVD based unit from a 09/02 onwards BMW is a worthwhile and cheap upgrade to allow perspective navigation and much faster routing etc. Having found one at a good price, burnt a new firmware disk to convert it from saying BMW to Range Rover and a new map disk we now have everything working again.

Just to confirm the MK3 was the issue in my system as it was not shutting down properly after a hard reset. 2005 E60 M5
