some here have replaced their 2012-2016 screens with android units so it got thinking that could these screens be replaced by the 2017 -2018 screens and will it all work...

The 2018+ infotainment screens definitely won't work in the 2012-2016. However, the 2017 screen could possibly work but I wouldn't want to be the one to experiment with that. The Android screens are our best option at this point. I've had mine for over 4 months now and it has been great. I use Apple CarPlay most of the time so I'm not even taking advantage of all the Android unit has to offer.
