Help! Identifying Negative & positive Wires

I am replacing the S/C Coolant Pump. The connector has been modified and I'm trying to identify the polarity of the wires? There is a brown and a red/white wire going into the connector?

The only way to be sure is with a voltmeter.
Especially if you think things have been modified & the SC water pump is sensitive to it being incorrect ! Paul,
