Is the 3ltr really noisy or is it me??

Have got a my15.5 vogue se 3ltr which seems to make a droning noise from the front. Took it to the dealer who had it for a week and said that it was the air intake design and that all 3ltr Range Rover l405s make the same noise. Whilst it was in, I had tdv8 as a loner which was unbelievably quiet by comparison. I am not talking about accelleration, the noise on the 3ltr is worst at 34mph with cruise control on. Has anybody else experienced this? Is the 3ltr really that much louder than the 4.4 at slow cruising speeds?

Is it me?

I have a SDV6 L494 an an SDV8 L405. I personally think the SDV6 is quieter and more refined!

I have never heard any one complain that the 3.0ltr is noisy, its a great smooth engine. Some thing is not right.

That's what i thought, thanks for the confirmation. It is annoying as both the dealer and Land Rover customer services are saying "that's what they do" I am going to test drive another 3ltr next week but I can't believe that it should be droning like this. Heartbreaking!

Heartbreaking that the dealer had it for a week and then tell you nothing is wrong. Try another dealer hopefully they will be a little better, hopefully. Censored

Test drive another ASAP - if it's better, then insist on driving yours and another back to back with the dealership tech person with you so that you can point out the difference - even if you have to agree to pay their labour time if you're wrong.

Don't get fobbed off - Carl has been IMHO too nice & in dispute for months -

I drive both often and the 3.0 is noticeably quieter than the 4.4 in almost all circumstances sir... Definitely something wrong with yours Rolling Eyes

We went to Prescott Hill Climb last year and was stood listening to a bunch of 405’s going up the hill, taking VIP’s etc and the 3.0’s sound like petrols at pace... Thats how quiet they are normally sir Thumbs Up

Hi, I had a 3.0tdv6 l405 and changed a month or so ago. Considered the Sdv8 because it's a strong unit and there is something about having the bigger engine (SC excluded) but went and bought another v6, primarily because it's noticeably quieter and more refined in real world use. I used to have a Touareg V8 Diesel and that sounded very similar to a petrol V8 but definitely much nicer sound than the LR counter-part!

Thanks for that, it enforces my thoughts that something isn't quite right. Will keep you posted.

What sort of "droning noise" is it? My MY16 TDV6 definitely makes a droning noise from the left side (left as I am sitting in the driving seat). It's there when I start the car and at idle/low revs, disappears pretty much when I am driving along normally and then reappears once I'm idling again.

I remember that my old L322 TDV8 used to make a noise from the left when it was very cold - a dealer told me that on that car it was something to do with the heating system and indeed it would disappear after a while presumably when the engine had warmed up enough.

Could it be the same thing on the L405?

Hi mattyb, on the l322 it would have been the fuel burning heater which was standard on the tdv8. I had that n mine. This noise is more like a drivetrain issue. I can believe that the land rover techs in the customer services are agreeing that the 3ltr should make a different noise at a steady speed. It is really noticeable between 30 and 40mph a if all tdv6 variants did this there would be a lot more mention of it... Unless I am hearing things... Going to try and test another 3ltr over the weekend or Monday. I simply can't believe that it is anything other than a fault on this particular car.

Ok, phae 1 completed....
Test drove a 2014 3ltr yesterday at a different dealer, guess what,it didnt make the same noise, however as the dealer pointed out it only had the 21" wheels on it.

Mine has the 22" Style 707 and although I dont believe that it should introduce a droning noise, he did point out that they would increase the cabin noise over the 21" wheels.

next installment tomorrow.

Mine is quieter and better riding on the 21s compared to an identical car I had on 22s.
