Towing socket broken

Anyone know how to fix this??

Springs broken on the cap so now it won’t stay shut, would like to remove the electrics if possible as I will never tow. had a quick look underneath car and see the wires go into something but don’t know where.

 Regards

I think if you lift the spare wheel cover you may find the cables come into the wheelwell on the nearside rear bulkhead, through a grommet lined hole. If it's a factory set up there should be a grey connector on the nearside whch should allow you to remove the cables/plugs. Seeing as yours has a T and S set up you may have a slightly different arrangement, perhaps two cables from the sockets into a joiner then the socket.

You could also pick up a socket and replace it for £2 or £3. Cheers

Any idea how to bung up the hole if I remove the wires? Regards

I think the hole is rectangular, so a rubber grommet should work. You may be able to get one from Dan at Duckworths or if you measure it carefully, then eBay may be the place. Alternatively, P F Jones, Britpart, Eurocarparts. Cheers

Would make much more sense to repair the spring/s or replace the socket.

IMHO you will devalue your vehicle by removing everything, and you never know when you might need to tow something... .

Tape it shut with gorilla tape?
Or take it to a towing place who should be able to replace the spring....
Keep them on the car. Useful to charge battery with an adaptor off the forum shop Thumbs Up

So after playing with it , I think That the spring is not replaceable because the pin that goes through the lid doesn’t knock out.

You can’t replace the socket because Land Rover mould the wires to the inside of the plastic so only thing you could do is replace with a Land Rover socket by the looks of it. Regards

Ditch them both and replace it with a single 13pin version. I fitted mine in minutes. Comes with a rubber grommet to keep boot dry. Plug and play on a 2011 model. Happy to assist you to fit it Thumbs Up
It will also look more discreet than 2 sockets
I top up my battery now and again through it via an adaptor and a Ctek battery conditioner.

Dr rob I will take you up on that offer if that’s ok?

To be honest I would like them gone they are ugly lol

But if I have to fit a single 13 pin thing then I will lol.

Do you have any experience with the groomer that would replace the wires at all buddy? Regards

No experience on the grommet but Dan will have some I reckon.
I replaced an old 7 pin with a new 13 pin so blanking grommet was not in place.
I’d bung a 13 on if I were you and then you have the option to top up battery Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

United Kingdom 2017 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Silicon Silver

Hi, I have just come in from replacing my 13 pin socket, I went on the internet and found a wiring diagram with the colour code. do not use that one as it will not match the wiring colours that are on the FF what I did was to dig out the silicon on the old socket to expose the wires and cut them leaving about 3-5 mm and then follow the wires as they go into the socket test before fitting to the car then fill with silicon and screw back with some anti-seize grease on the screws,
Hope this helps with your 7 pin?

Forgot to say it cost me £6 instead of £118 from LR

I think the 13 pin have more functionality than standard 7 pin wiring will allow Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

DR ROB,

have you got pics of what you did? i think i may go this route as i dont seem to be getting anywhere with regards to removing them completley and making sure the boot is re grommeted lol,

Or i guess the other way is to replace the socket like for like from land rover?

Still not sure where the wires go to and get connected? Regards
