Towbar mounted load carrier | |
Evenin' All
There were a couple of old posts on rear mounted bike carriers (towbar mounted) and one of them mentioned a load carrier option.
Anyway - I needed to gain some extra load space in the FF as we have a little portable RIB that we take down to the beach and on holidays and that plus engine, plus camping gear plus dog, plus wife yada yada yada is a bit tight even for a FF
So did a bit of research and ended up buying this one https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel...C4urewQXIs
Fitted it at the weekend and did a trial run with the boat (45kgs) on the back and it was very stable. After a 50 mile round trip and loading/unloading there was no movement or flex in the mounting at all.
I particularly liked this model as it is pretty flexible in terms of how you configure the load area and also you can open the upper tailgate with the upright attached if your load isn't to high, and open the lower tailgate by removing the upright which takes about 10 secs
Anyway - no affiliation to these lot but I thought it might be of interest to some on here. There are of course the odd story circulating about LR swan neck towballs dropping off/out but if that were to happen I think I would have bigger issues with a twin axle 'van on the back than with a load carrier
The unit is rated at 75kg capacity with our FF towbar so is quite a handy load capacity.
Some pics below for your interest and I will report back as to how it goes on a fully loaded round trip to Scotland in a few weeks time!
Basic carrier fitted
Clamps to towball with a "chuck" then also clamped with a 19mm bolt to 36Nm
Upright fitted with optional multi position arms, post slides in and locks with 1 pin (difficult to see in this pic - the springy this is the restraint for the pin not the pin itself
And how it looks loaded on the FF
