Checking Gearbox Fluid Level

Whilst flicking through RAVE I found that when checking the gearbox oil level there is a narrow temperature range where this must be done for both the Petrol and the Diesel.

You will get an incorrect reading if checking outside of this range.

ZF 5HP24: 30-40C
GM 5L40-E: 35-45C

RR is going in for a g'box fluid & filter change in the new year...

2010 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

They were until lots of people started complaining of gearbox slipping/ slurring of gearchanges then LR recommended I think a change every 3 year, which means it's a short lifespan! It's the same for the Viscous Coupling in the 4wd system that decides how much power is feed to the front and rear wheels - that was sealed for life until Freelander1 owners started suffering horrendous tyre wear problems (coupled with a wrong differential gear problem) and LR "unsealed" the life of that too. In the case of the VC they found that the special fluid that changes viscosity to make the VC lock up didn't last for ever! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

They are sealed for life of the warranty, as far as LR is concerned thats all that matters.

A mechanical device cannot sit in its own filth and continue to work indefinitely!

As your gearbox doesn't live in the engine compartment - I'd say no.

It's a fill/level plug so you stick some oil in through the same hole - when it starts dribbling out its full. Can only really be accessed suitably when up on ramps.

I did a gearbox filter and oil change before the winter. easy job but first time took a while. the fill/level plug is easy enough to access if you want to top up or check the level. i did mine with the car in off-road setting and had enough room.

You are supposed to check the gearbox oil when engine is running though, in neutral. I don't fancy doing that lying under it! When I flushed mine, I forgot the "engine running" bit and lost a fair amount up my sleeve... Sad

Life means 100,000 miles so far as ZF and Land Rover are concerned. That's why they have the limit on their warranty mileage Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

ZF Revised this figure to 60K for the 5 speed. Due to failures when the oil was left longer than that. The 6 speed is pretty much the same gearbox internally, except it has an extra gear in it, the extra gear wont add 40k to the life of the oil...

Land Rover don't want to change your oil - if you need a replacement gearbox at 120K then that's a bonus for them because you'll be out of warranty. It's not a conspiracy theory, its just how it is.

Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - 4.4L NA V8 - AJ41 - Transmission Fluid Level Check

General Procedures

• WARNINGS:

warning Observe due care when draining transmission fluid as the fluid can be very hot.

warning Observe due care when working near a hot exhaust system.

cautionCAUTION: The gearbox fluid level must only be checked when the temperature of the fluid is between 30 degrees and 50 degrees. The fluid level obtained will be incorrect if the reading is outside this temperature range.


1. The following steps must be observed before starting the transmission fluid level check and top-up.

* The vehicle must be on a horizontal ramp.

* The parking brake must be applied.

* The wheels must be chocked.

2. cautionCAUTION: Make sure the transmission fluid temperature is below 30 degrees before starting the fluid level check.

Connect T4 to the on-board diagnostic connector to monitor the transmission fluid temperature.


3. Start the engine. Move the selector lever from 'P' through all gear positions, pausing in each gear position for 2-3 seconds and return to the 'P' position.


4. warningWARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

Raise and support the vehicle.


5. Place a container under the transmission.

6. WARNINGS:

Remove the transmission fluid filler/level plug.

* Clean the area around the filler/level plug.

* Remove and discard the sealing washer.



7. If no fluid loss is apparent when the filler/level plug is removed, with the engine at idle, continue to fill the transmission until a small thread of oil runs from oil filler/level hole.


8. Install the transmission fluid filler/level plug and tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft).

* Install a new sealing washer.

* Remove the container.



9. Disconnect T4 from the vehicle.


Easiest way to check the temp is to have the engine at idle, remove the fill plug. No oil, or hardly any oil should drain out. Put a small bucket under the tranny. Shut the RR off. Some fluid will flow into the small bucket. Once you have enough fluid to test the temp, about 4 OZ. , turn the RR back on to stop the flow. Now just check the temp with one of those things you test turkey, cakes, and etc...with. Thumbs Up
then add if its within the range, or let it run to get it up to temp 2006 RR 4.4 HSE
