Went to start but just a click

Weird one this morning. Jumped in the car ready for work, pressed the starter to accessory position as I always do and then placed foot on brake and pressed the starter button again and all I got was a click no engine start?

Tried this several times. Went in sulking and told the wife. Went back out locked and unlocked the car and it started??

It was almost like I wasn’t pressing the brake pedal enough. But I was

Just a weird moment for the car or a known problem? Regards

Try switching the windscreen wipers on and off next time it happens, then try starting it again.
Please report back.

The “clunk” then nothing is a very common fault.
Like Stan says, it is usually solved by replacing either the battery or the starter motor ( or both )., but I have read that switching something on, usually, the wipers, performs some form of “D C wetting”, where a small current flow is sufficient to clear the fault temporarily, but sufficient to allow the starter to function again.

It is just a theory, but it costs nothing to try. Thumbs Up
Mike.

P.S.
I suspect that burned contacts in the solenoid part of the starter motor is the real culprit.

The very act of locking and unlocking the car probably would in effect be the same, and “blow away” the fault., allowing you to then start the car.

My 2012 WM had exactly the same (battery fine but occasionally just click when button pressed) and it was cured by replacing the starter motor, it's a known weakness. Only Range Rovers since 1988
