Deployable steps stripped bolt

Hey guys

Tonight I noticed that my drivers deployable side step sits almost touching the front jack point you could possibly slide a piece of paper between the two just. The rear has a little gap whilst the passenger has a small gap both front and rear?

So I tried to loosen the bolts at the front and pull it down slightly but it didn’t want to know.

Whilst I was under there I thought I would check all the bolts holding the steps on as I only fitted them 4 or so weeks ago.

Then as I was checking them I remembered that I over tightened one of the small m6 bolts that go into the side so as I went to check it’s tightness it was just spinning.

Now my questions are

Would it be the bolt or the thread in the car that was stripped? Seen as the bolt is a2 stainless and I’m guessing the bolt hole is steel so the stainless should be softer.

Will the bolt fall out? Kind of retoracle because it hasn’t fallen out in 4 weeks and my brain won’t work but seen as it is stripped I’m guessing that it won’t fall out because the threads won’t allow it to be unscrewed?
If this is the case then I guess it should be fine to leave it as it’s acting as a up and down support for the steps. Regards

Daz

Are you sure you stripped the bolt thread?

The nuts are captive nuts so more likely that the weld holding the nut in place broke and therefore the nut it just spinning on the bolt..

This happened to me when I fitted my steps.. In the end I drilled a couple of access holes so I could get a Spanner on the nut and do it up..

Interesting thought .::

No I’m not 100% it’s stripped. I didn’t want to remove the entire step again lol.

I think I may just leave it. You think all the other bolts will be fine in terms of strength and keeping the step bolted on etc? Regards

I suspect they will be fine holding the steps on.
The steps sort of hook on anyway so very unlikely to fall off.. Current Family:
