Euro 6 retrofit? Will it be possible?

The wise Mayor Khan's ULEZ down here in London has declared war on Euro 5 diesels as many of you will already know. I live inside the zone and, whilst I have a resident's discount, that will be removed in October 2021 next year.

That means I will likely have to sell my trusty 2011 TDV8 which I am otherwise perfectly happy with. Replacement browsing carries on during evenings like a 405 5.0, or a 405 SDV8 Euro6, or a L322 5.0 However I'd much rather keep my TDV8 for a bit longer. I just really like it.

So I have been living in hope for any Euro 6 conversion kits that may appear on the market.

I am realistic though: it's likely any kits won't be financially practical, especially against the fast-sinking L322 values. But I just read this:

Hoping the Germans who love their diesels will come up with something viable. The article shows the potential may be there with a first step being government approval of such systems.

So maybe with an ammonia tank (i.e.AdBlue) I can keep my L322?

I expect it will be like the LPG cars a few years ago, a big thing about if you had LPG you could get free congestion charge but the only vehicles in the scheme were ones converted at the factory when made, all retrofits were excluded...

It would be too costly for them to have your kit tested to see if had been fitted 100% properly..!!

Sounds like Merc, VW et will be picking up the bill, around €3300

I think those suppliers are approved in Germany so I guess if you have them fit it it is certified.
Yes you would need TFL to accept an approved system + install.

TFL do actually have schemes running for this on lorries and busses.
I emailed a couple of firms doing it. But they said the lorry systems are too big and too expensive.

They do indeed, but they are not cost-effective for anything other than highly specialised vehicles.

The supermarket I drive for are replacing all their euro 5 trucks that have years of good service in them with euro 6. FWIW, there is very little difference between euro's 5 & 6 HGV wise. ATM, the euro 5 trucks are only used outside the Khanzone or being cascaded (like many fleets inc' buses) to other areas.

Conversions require initial certification & an addition emissions test annually at a specialist (not general MOT Station). 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Just thought it was worthwhile reinvigorating this thread, particularly with the imminence of the expanded ULEZ and the inevitable rollout of many more ‘clean air zones’ across the UK and Europe in particular. I would love to keep my L322 4.4TDV8 on the road for a very long time to come so I am hopeful that a solution can be found to reduce emissions to Euro 6 levels.

I have found a company called Cybrand which specialises in the installation of Euro 6 conversion kits. They have gained type approval for many vehicles including certain makes of taxi, vans and also the Defender with the Puma engine, see here: https://www.cybrand.co.uk/defender

The conversion kit and installation process is actually quite simple. The ECU that controls ad blue injection works seems to work independently of the vehicle, as it’s based on exhaust temps. However, any wired ‘connection’ would inevitably only read OBD2 signals so in theory, this will fit to any vehicle in principle. The new exhaust section between DPF and back box also looks pretty standard. Clearly it would need to be modified/manufactured to simply bolt onto L322 out of the box but, a very simple engineering task in principle. Once the design and dimensions are known, manufacturing in numbers would be easy. I would also contend that finding suitable locations for the ad blue reservoir and ECU won’t be a challenge on an L322 as lots of cavities to work with.

Therefore, the only ‘major’ challenge is to gain type approval. I’ve no idea of the cost but, assuming it’s in the region of £10k I’m fairly certain that that kind of money could be found from crowdsourcing amongst this community. More and more vehicles are having these retrofits; the conversion kits will inevitably become more widespread and hopefully cheaper as a result; and if type approval can be gained, once converted by an approved installer then your car get’s automatically registered as Euro 6 compliant on the necessary databases.

I’m not going to be able to finish without mentioning price. At the moment, the linked Cybrand conversion on the Defender was £5500+VAT. I know that is obviously a lot of money but this price will surely come down in time as competition goes up. And, upgrading to a commensurate L405 would be probably double that so conversion may well become a viable option for many.

I’m interested in others’ thoughts on this and, if there is a way of gauging interest for a crowdsourcing option should applying for type approval be a possibility through the forum. Anyway, I hope others interested in this topic find this interesting 👍 Andy

I spoke to Cybrand. The cost of the kit is one thing. It's the additional cost of getting type approval (emissions) which in their case they just justified based on multiple unit sales. I guess if enough of us got a group buy then maybe.

The problem with ULEZ is that the goal posts will move, almost guaranteed that Euro 6 diesels, currently allowed, will be disallowed when Euro 7 comes in.

I now live near the current border and it's £12.50 a day to drive out the end of my street.

It's all grim.

Are these kits going to also lock out the car when the tank is empty ? .... the number of times I get into the work vehicles and its moaning that it'll refuse to start in counting down mileage just makes me think I'd hate that in my own car.

What do I honestly think ?

I think that simply pricing out vehicles of an area is a naïve approach to the wider issue of transport, vehicles, you name it. I think it needs a complete overhaul / rethink, but thats a different thread to go off in. V8 or else ...

Short answer - yes they have to give you a countdown to non-start if there is a detected or perceived fault in the SCR system to comply with EU adopted regs.. 8/10 times it's a downstream NOx sensor issue.

Tfl do not accept modified vehicles, if its not type approved from the factory they wont accept it.

The s/c v8 petrol is ulez maybe try and find a nice example to purchase.

Not only this, but Khan is looking into using the ULEZ cameras to start charging all cars a daily charge, even if your car is ULEZ compliant.
