TRW front brake calipers - disc & pad change info

Thought it might be helpful for some L405 Tdv6 owners to have this detail.

Our 2014 MY has TRW front brake callipers. Here are the details of what was ordered and DIY fitted because there are different torque settings, sizes and you could order the wrong parts depending on your brake set up:-

TRW 19“ Caliper

Front brake disc diameter = 360mm:
Bought EBC Front Brake Discs for “Landrover Range Rover L405 3.0 TD 258BHP 2012 on” £171 including VAT and delivery - bought from Larkspeed Performance via eBay

Torque setting: our disc screw required a T50 bit and was torqued @ 35nm

Front set of brake pads:
BA 2220A - Front Brake Pads DP62123 EBC Greenstuff Suitable for TRW 19'' Caliper Type Vehicles (With Harmonic Balancer). £ 56.14 including VAT and delivery - bought from Bearmach

2 x carrier bolts:
A 21mm hex socket is required to remove and refit these. They are torqued very tightly. Whilst trying to remove the driver’s side bolts, my 21mm socket snapped. Concerned the bolt heads had sheared or gotten damaged, 2 x new retaining bolts were purchased from the local LR parts department, described as, “ELR033274 C08F04 BOLT”. Cost £4.54 + VAT each.

Torque setting: bought a 21mm black impact socket after my 21mm socket snapped (it cost just under £10 for the impact socket from a trade specialist). That little socket made the job easy along with an 18” breaker bar. Ours were re-torqued @ 135nm stage 1 plus 60 degrees stage 2 - and that is very tight/ was difficult to achieve. If you don’t have a tool to work out the degrees, there is a helpful video on YouTube called, “How to angle degree torque cheat without a special tool, usually used on torque to yield bolts VOTD”

4x Brake caliper guide pin boots / bellows:
Suitable for TRW / LUCAS / GIRLING calipers. Suitable for front or rear fitment. Includes a free sachet of assembly paste. Just replaced the existing boots for new ones. The existing guide pins were in fine condition and didn’t need replaced - bought from Frenchtech UK via eBay for £4.95 including delivery.

Front brake wear sensor wire:
1384mm in length. Used Pagid, same day available from ECP £18.85

Piston rings:
You won’t push these back by hand. On one side, we managed to push the two pistons carefully back using a G-clamp and one of the old brake pads. On the other, a piston reset tool was used. The reset tool was easier to use as you would expect. See this link

Gremlin, if your front calipers look like the below, that’s a TRW caliper:

Also, to be on the safe side, you could measure the diameter of your front brake discs to confirm if they’re 360 or 380mm diameter (there are two different sizes that can be bought).

If you get stuck, if you ring a LR parts dept, or Bearmach or Rimmer Bros and give them your registration/ chassis number they can help you ID/ pick the right sizes, they’ve always been helpful for me.

I’m not clear if the brake calipers/ set up changed for your year (2017) hence the cautionary reply as ours is 2014MY. Someone else more knowledgeable might also come along soon…

Changing the front discs and pads on ours and all the associated efforts to clean everything up was a filthy job. That’s what took me the time. Maybe I went OTT though but that was my least enjoyable part. Brake cleaner, a large kitchen roll/ similar, double gloved rubber gloves and a large thick piece of cardboard/ similar under the brake being worked on is all advisable to help manage the cleaning and mess.

The TDv6 with TRW front calipers is a more than capable combination, for our needs at least. The car has never put a boot wrong. We always just buy quality replacement discs and pads - EBC are definitely quality in my experience.
