Help me build my off road expedition trailer :) help needed

Ok so... I'm building an L405 Trailer, I have 8 20" wheels (L405) and I am struggling to find out what stub axxle I need to be able to use my 20" wheels... I know they are roughly 5x112 etc. But I can't seem to find stub axles to fit these wheels.. can any one help? Maybe I am searching for the wrong thing?

I am building it with air suspension and independent trailing arm suspension with it's own onboard battery, charged by a 13 pin caravan plug, this will also power the compressor and leveling valves for the trailer..

Appreciate any help

I should add it's unbraked single axle

I think all RR wheels are 5x120 PCD 2021 D350 Fifty Edition

Yes you are correct.. mobile phone type O PCD 120..

My only options I think are a 4x100 stub axle and an adapter... but I'd prefer it to be a stub axle that is already 5x 120 Very Happy

You might have a bit more luck at a 5 stud axle from someone that supplies agricultural trailer parts. The ones I’ve seen all seem to be 5 or 6 stud. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition

Not be simpler using a rear axle setup from a td5 discovery (or P38 RR ) ? ... would be the same PCD for the wheels, track width etc. already compatible for air springs as they were a fitment to that vehicle ( as was the P38 ) so parts readily available.

Strip the diff and halfshafts out, calipers off etc, weight wouldn't be that bad. They go on ebay for around £150 ...

Realistically through ... unbraked ? thats going to limit you significantly weight wise surely ? a total limit of 750kg for the trailer would mean that self levelling would almost be hardly worth the complication. Your 4 wheels alone will rack up to almost 150kg, the trailer frame and body likely another 200kg (if not more )... so your already down for a load capacity of 400kg. How much is that really going to deflect the suspension such that you need levelling ... would springs not be easier, and reduce complication ? V8 or else ...

Here in Oz, the 5 x 120 is as common as muck and easily purchased from any trailer supplier, auto parts supplier, or eBay. It's probably the most common trailer hub down here close followed by a Ford 5 stud pattern. You will need to match the bearings to the stub axle. Here, there are two groups - Holden bearings or Ford bearings (different sizes). That may apply up there. Have a look at the UK AL-KO catalogue. There may be something there. There certainly is in the Oz version of their catalogue.

It was/is used on a number of GM cars, e.g., the Holden Commodore. Maybe the Opel Commodore or some Vauxhalls use the same PCD Ron B. VK2OTC

VW transporter rear end may be worth a look, they have the same stud pattern

Or just use some adapters, theres many variants availabe.


I do agree with the 750kg weight issue though, you aren't going to have a huge capacity if you want to legally carry much more than a couple of hundred kilograms Current

I was watching the Guy Martin Nürburgring episode and I'm sure he had RR wheels on the rear of his Transit. Transit hubs might be an option. See pic here:

Rear hubs on Guy’s transit were not ford items.

There is a fellow building Volkswagen transporter alike trailers who may sell suspension units with the right pcd?

Bill Blackmore was his name I think, google might be a way to locate him?

Must admit they are not my choice, but the pcd on transit wheels seems huge.
My involvement with transits ended in 90’s when I moved on from my first employer.
