Replacing the head unit on the cheap

My 2003 hse stereo hasn’t worked since I got it.

I’ve got a double din stereo already and all I want is some music in me car!

Is this doable?

Yeah have read that. Makes no sense to my simple mind!

I’m just after putting a stereo in that plays music, not worried about the original functions!

Depends what system is already in there and whether it has built in amps or if the car has individual amplifiers ie logic 7. If it's a head unit with built in amplifiers then a simple adaptor lead is required. If not then you will need to bypass the amps.

The hole in the dash isn't actually double din sized although it looks it. A double din will fit but a lot of work is required cutting plastic behind the dashboard.

There’s a dash adapter I can get.

Mine is the hse so standard in dash CD player.

Not seen the dash adaptors before but if it works it should be simple enough. I don't think the hse will have individual amps.

Top of the dash needs to come off to remove the original radio though.

Might be easier to get another hse unit from a breakers and do like for like swap.

Should be possible to swap out with something else.

Have you checked RAVE for the connection details? Or maybe looked at BMW stuff, as it’s the sa,e electronics?

I had a double din unit fitted in my old hse. Depending on the size of the unit, a fair amount of the plastic behind the dash has to be trimmed . The android unit appears to be an easier fit because it’s a better shape to the rear. One thing we did find out is that if you have a cente dash speaker, there will be a small amp in the left cubby in the boot. IIRC you need a trim piece from an e39 5 series to fill the hole . Not too daunting if you are handy with some basic tools, or find s9meone local to fire one in. I ran about for ages with a Bluetooth speaker in mine when the stereo packed up!

I don’t know as I don’t know much about the stereo.

It lights up when the lights are on but nothing is displayed on any of the displays and no sound.

It came on twice for 5 second bursts once but nowt on display when it happened.
