Wheel/tyre swap and now rubbing - L322

Swapped over some 22" wheels with 265/35 R22 for 295/40 R22 and now have a bit of rubbing when accelerating and also turning. Doesn't always happen but its noticeable.

Was it always going to happen with the new size tyres, anything obvious I can do? Or is it a case or swapping the tyres over or buying new ones?

If it’s rubbing from the rear, the arch liners can be adjusted with a self tapper, used to be a bodge when larger off-road tyres were fitted. The rubbing on the front migh5 be from the bottom plates end of the strut, almost like a plastic split pin that can be cut off. If you search for I think cooper Zeons, the threads should come up

It would be helpful to share what the wheel specs are (width and offset) and also which areas it is rubbing.

You’ve gone from the sidewalls being 35% of 265 mm to being 40% of 295 mm, so I’m not that surprised. The whole thing is bigger in the wheelarches. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Not sure about offsets etc. I know next to nothing about tyres/wheels I am afraid. Assuming all alloys are the same offset I will detail them below.

The originals were Genuine Overfinch Olympus 22" 265/35/R22 Nexens and the new wheels are Genuine Turbines with 295/40/R22 Y Continentals bought from Craig at CamTech. I thought the advert on here might have had the details but it appears he has removed the details in the advert. I did check and Craig confirmed they would fit a L322 before I bought them so not sure where it is going wrong.

I can see where they are rubbing a little on the front and rear offside. Hard to see where else and not entirely sure what I am looking at.

What do you think I should be doing? Swap the Nexans over to the Turbines? Would this work? and then sell the OF separately or with the Conti tyres.. Or buy suitable tyres for the Turbines? Any recommendations on tyre make/size?

295/40/22 on an L322 is bonkers, they are 33mm oversize in diameter than std and are 40mm wider than std on an L322

This shows the std 255/50/20 size for an L322, compared to what you have - there is no wonder it is rubbing.

275/40/22 is std size fit on an L405, yes you can get away with 285/40/22 on an L405, but 295’s are even too big for a L405, - 285’s only just clear and usually catch on the inner wing liner with some alloys - on a 322 that size will not work without issues in that aspect ratio and on 22’s - that is unless you want to drive around in extended off-road mode all the time.

If you want to keep the 22’s if anything I’d go for 285/35/22 as these are the nearest to OEM in diameter:-

This will also be dependant on the offset of which alloys you are running - if they are genuine Turbines then they should be ok as they have more offset than std 322 oem alloys.

I have run virtually every tyre option on both 322’s and 405’s on standard suspensions in 18”, 19”, 20” and 22” in std road tyres, winter tyres, AT and muds in most widths so have a jolly good idea of what works and what doesn’t Thumbs Up 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Thank Vogue, you seem to know what you are talking about and the type of help I was hoping for..

So it appears I will be selling the 295/40/R22 Y Continentals separately and then the OF alloys. Otherwise its just going to be the same pain in the backside for someone else if I put them on the Overfinch Olympus's that I have.

Is it not worth putting the 265/35/R22 Nexens that I already have on to the Turbines?

or

Any particular tyre you recommend as a 285/35/22? Nexens? Hankook? Pirrelli?

The 265/35 you have are too small in diameter for a 322, my guess those wheels and tyres were originally for an older series 1 Range Rover Sport as they ran smaller dia tyres.

If you want to increase the tyre size above std on your 322 and keep the 22’s I would go for 275/40/22 - which is also the std size for an L405 and will work on a 322.

If you want to keep std L322 diameter in a 22, then your only equivalent diameter to the original size of 255/50/20 is 285/35/22.

In my opinion the 275/40/22 is the better option, it has a slightly deeper sidewall giving better rim protection and also a better ride - they will also lift your gearing slightly which should also make your speedo read accurate rather than 3mph under.

Nexen are ok for a budget tyre - the sidewalls seem very soft though - possibly due to less plys. I would go for Continental, Pirelli, General, Cooper, Michelin, Vredestein - I have used all of these and not been disapointed with grip, road noise or wear. The Conti’s have an excellent rim protection bead moulded into the tyre and seem to resist kerbing better than a lot of others.

Most choices come down to budget, what is available in your tyre size, brand preference and aesthetics. I would avoid the cheapest tyres - I once ran a cheap set of Wanli and they were truly horrific - no grip, more noisy than AT tyres, and vibrated badly. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Ramsden78,

The genuine overfinch and genuine L405 wheels are both 22 x 9.5, and only a 3mm difference in offset. So fitment is very similar. The 295/40R22 can be made to work with minor adjusting of the wheel well liners, so if you like the the tire width and look, it will be worth while to get your hands dirty. I've gotten a 305/40R22 to work with some minor adjustments to the wheel well liners.

If you want a problem free ride with no modifications, you can get 285/40R22 Pirelli or Continental land rover spec (standard on some Discovery 5 and RRS SVR models) which also have the sound reducing foam.

As Vogue mentioned, 275/40R22 is standard on the L405, but it looks too narrow in my opinion.

I’ve got two sets of tyres and wheels on an L405, 275 and 285’s - the 285’s catch on full lock on std RR rims. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Hi guys,

Just a bit of an update - I have replaced all with 285/35/R22 Toyos and now perfect without any rubbing (not into modifying car etc) and loving the 4.4.

I am currently working with Craig on IM as I believe it was a genuine mistake and can be rectified, and hope to come to a settlement on the tyres that were removed.

John
