Has anyone spent any time with a car fitted with adaptive cruise with steering assist, please? I am wondering how effective it is and whether or not you find yourself actually using it. Else on a Vogue or VSE I could save a packet sticking with the queue assist cruise since I don’t need park assist.

I don’t use the park assist.

I had a demo on my Range Rover day, ended up parking it manually.


I really didn’t like the adaptive cruise when I first bought the car, but now I enjoy it.. took me a year as I’m a slow learner...!!!! Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

I have two cars with adaptive cruise and wouldn't be without it, much safer and easier to drive but there are some on here that don't like it for some reason. You do still have to drive and I use the distance control and accelerator to smooth things out but the fact that if I set it the speed to 70 on the motorway and come up behind someone doing 68 it gently drops my speed to match instead of having me bowling up to get too close to them is a wonder of technology.


I'm afraid that I don't know what steering assist is though, my ignorance so I will watch this thread to see what others say about it.

I don't use auto parking or lane assist

But the adaptive cruise control is very good. Takes a little getting used to though, for example, if you pull out of the slow lane and the car in the next lane is closer to you than the one in the lane you are coming out of, you need to pre-emptively get on the accelerator to override the cruise control or it will slow you down and even put the brakes on.

I was loaned a RRS with it. I did 500 mainly motorway miles.

The lane assist is nothing like the autopilot in my Tesla, which steers for you and keeps you central.

Lane Assist more gives the wheel a tug if you stray close to a line. Slightly odd but occasionally useful if your attention has wandered (e.g. fiddling with the overly complex infotainment/satnav).

It also has the option to give a vibration instead of tugging the wheel.

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts. It is the MY19 steering assist feature of ‘Adaptive Cruise with Steering Assist’ I am particularly interested in (vs the older technologies like lane keeping or regular adaptive cruise which I am familiar with). It’s also available on the latest RRS and on some Jags so i’ll have a poke about to see what I can find and i’ll share anything interesting here. The big test for steering assist, I think, will be its ability to stay centred in the lane and it’s useability on anything other than a straightish motorway, though I’m not too hopeful. I expect Land Rover will be at 2018 levels of Tesla automation in about 2025...

I have this on my 19MY and I must say it’s mighty clever on the motorway and works on sweeping bends as well not just straight roads. You have the facility to either have it on with adaptive cruise or turn it off and just have adaptive cruise on. It will not let you leave the lane you are in unless you operate the indicators into the direction of the lane you want to enter and there is no traffic in that lane. You can actually let go of the steering wheel and it will keep the car in lane but an alarm will sound and a display comes up to tell you to put your hands back on the steering wheel.
I must admit I have not used it much as I have not travelled that far with my car as yet but will be travelling up to Scotland from South Wales for the 6 Nations rugby match and will use it then.

* reminded too much of Steering assist’s prescience. Lane Keep assist is much more useful. Would not pay for Steering assist next time around.
* yes, it keeps the car centered... but it makes mistakes.
* (of an X5 with similar tech) it’s a pain in the backside.
* good on motorways especially at night... no regrets with this option.

On the basis of this feedback so far I am not inclined to spec it, personally.
