Handbrake Warning Light Flashing and Beeping

Hi there, I started up the Range Rover today and as soon as the engine started (whilst parked up) the handbrake light started to flash (along with a rapid beeping) and then the brake pedal momentarily went soft, before firming up again and the warning light extinguished.

After this happened I tried applying / releasing the electronic handbrake again without issues, and then tested the brakes and everything was fine.

I then drove home without issues and when checking on the IID tool at home no brake related faults were logged.

Any ideas what this spurious fault could point to?

Many thanks,

Philip.

Possibly a sticking EPB cable or actuator. Probably a bit slow to release. Recall having something similar on the 3.6 once then never again, bit of spray lube on the actuator might help if you can find it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi thanks for the reply - would that also explain the brake pedal going soft, whilst the handbrake light was flashing, because that was what worried me the most?

Probably not, though if the pedal was pressed before starting the car it would firm up, then when started the servo would kick in causing the pedal to drop a bit. Not something you would notice normally but if you were thinking brakes at the time it would possibly catch you attention.

Go out, press the pedal a couple of times with the engine off, then start it, you should notice the pedal give a bit. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi there, you are totally spot on with your reply.

I tried today and it's exactly as you said, starting the engine with your foot on the brake does indeed make the brake pedal go soft and lower as the servo kicks in. It was just that I coupled this sensation with the beeping and flashing handbrake symbol and thought "Oh No - I have no brakes!".

Where is the EPB actuator located - does the hanbrake use the rear discs / pads to activate or is it located elsewhere?

Many thanks,

Philip.

Mine did this one morning too - the first cold morning we've had. The manual is no use. I should have checked with my IID *BUT* later that day I left the FBH running and it flattened the battery which of course gave me about 9 trillion DTC's Very Happy Land Rover Addict
