4.4TD Cracked Inlet Manifold Questions - Restricted Mode.

My car went into 'Restricted Mode' over the weekend a couple of times.

I took it in the local indy today and they plugged it in, poked around under the bonnet for a while, and diagnosed a likely cracked inlet manifold. Which apparently is a "about a grand" of a job. Big Cry

However, they did say on the 4.4TD there was a manufacturing fault on some of them, and that there was a service bulletin about it. They had heard of LR picking up some of the tab under 'goodwill' if its done at the main stealers "if you chew their ear hard enough" and quote the relevant bulletin number (which they didn't know). They suggested this may be viable even on my 2010 car and full dealer history isnt necessary due to the nature of the failed part.

Does that ring true with anyone? And how to find out the relevant bulletin number please?

Also, if I do have to stump up for it at the indy, does circa £400 for the part and a full days labour at circa £500 sound about right? I've no reason to doubt my indy, but as they say, trust but verify. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Hmm,

Part is £400 on LR direct each side....

Has he checked the small hoses. Linking the manifold to the plenum. These are prone to failure and much more straightforward 👍🏻

If he needs to do the manifolds then it probably is a full day, if it’s just the hoses it’s a couple of hours.

You could have a go via LR though it’s probably an uphill battle. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I only reported one failed in my Fault Log, but several plenum were reported as cracked., but the most common failure is the 4 short rubber hoses.

It is the drivers side, but with a days fitting involved, I'd not want to chance a used one if there's a known manufacturing fault with them. May end up doing it again in six months otherwise.

Well it was a five minute shufty as I called in unscheduled. He seemed to feel the hoses all looked alright and due to the location of the soot on the engine cover, this signified a manifold. But final clarification would be when it's in to be done I guess. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

This was the only previous manifold crack I found.

The TDV6 inlet manifolds are on their 8th version although they got a year's head start on the 4.4 TDV8 with 2009 production. My son and I recently changed one of his 2009-built 3.0 D4's which took us 2 days although worse engine bay access than the L322 including interference from the EGR valve on the exhaust manifold, which is n/a to the 4.4 TDV8.

Looking like the indy and the "about a grand" is the way then. And hope it's something lesser like the hoses or chamber when they start to strip it down.

First available space is next month. I'm a week or so in China between now and then so I'll update when its fixed so Baltic has some data to use for others.

Meanwhile I'll be the bloke turning my engine off at the lights to get the thing out of restricted mode.......... 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Ive never heard of a 4.4 needing an inlet manifold changing yet! Plenty of 3.6's though...
If yours does need changing then it will need 4 injector fitting kits & pipework as they are a single fit only deal.

I would be checking the 4 inlet rubber pipes first... You can easily check them yourself simply by removing the engine cover (simply just pulls off) and check the four rubber pipes for splits, usually easy to see as will be sooty! Thumbs Up

I originally had this diagnosis on 4.4 when it wouldn't pass a pressure test after going into restrictive performance. In the end it was linked to exhaust blow between two sensors and a subsequent miscorrelation. Fault only came up when held at full boost for 30s+ Cheers

James

I remember that case Buzz, but I must have mis- recorded it as a split in the plenum rather than the actual manifold.
Sorry.

Craig,
The one that definitely split is shown in a link a few posts up.
The actual split was around the neck of the “tube” the rubber hoses attach to., on just one of the ports.
