That's certainly one way of replacing turbos!

Hi Giles,

Sorry for the delay in replying. No my car doesn't whistle. the only noise on acceleration (apart from the usual) is an occasional bit of a whine from the gearbox in the lower gears if accelerating hard.
I have now got my IIDTool which I will set up and use of the next couple of days. Unfortunately the 'many' errors have come back but not consistently so I am wondering what the cause might be. First thing is to check the codes to see if the codes on the MAP sensor (high resistance, etc) have come back too which might explain it. Also wondering about ignition switch or things like that.
I will update once I have more information. Since we both seem to have the same problem it would be useful to keep in touch.

Thanks, Nick Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Thanks for the reply Nick.

I have a whistle noise but I'm not sure if it could be turbo related, a leak somewhere or possible the exhaust manifold. The whistle is only heard under full boost between about 2500-3000rpm. It seems to come more from the left of the engine, sort of under the passenger footwell. It doesn't seem to have any correlation with the limp mode we are both having.

I'm not getting any other error related to the MAP sensor - I presume the actual MAP sensor itself is fine but I'm going to swap the two of them over just to confirm the problem stays with 'Sensor A'. I'll get this done this weekend.

I'm thinking that 'sensor A' is on the right side of the engine (driver's side/ off-side). Can anyone confirm this?

I would concur as the nasty clonking/rattling sound (combined with burning oil!) on my failed one with the same code is the drivers side..... Land Rover Addict

Yes - the manual is pretty unclear but Bank 1 is Bank A which is the drivers side. It took me a while to check that out when I first started having these problems but it is definitely right. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Ok, so I've swapped my two MAP sensors over. The fault remains on Sensor A.

From this, I deduce:
1. The fault is genuinely, and it isn't just a faulty MAP sensor.
2. I have a boost leak or turbo fault on the right bank of the engine.

What next? Pressure/ smoke test to search for leaks?

If there is no leak, I presume that means a new turbo. I understand the right turbo is much easier to change and can be done with the engine in place. Would you consider only replacing the right turbo and keeping the job relatively simple or should I bite the bullet, drop the engine and do both?

Smoke test is the way forward, I’ve also replaced both my turbos! Wouldn’t just do one,as the other wouldn’t be long in following! 2014 vogue se

Hi Giles. I wouldn't rush to blame the turbo just yet but certainly get a smoke test to eliminate split hoses etc. There's no certainty that our two faults have the same cause but they are remarkably similar. Read the below which I have posted on my original thread. Do you have an IID Tool or access to a code reader? Worth checking if you are getting similar errors to me.

I now have the IID Tool. Very impressive. I am getting various errors at different times to do with open circuit and short circuit and high resistance on the bank A map sensor. These appear to be then leading to all the other errors. I have long suspected that there is a problem with the quality of the electrical connections on the sensor plug. It would also explain why the car ran perfectly for a while when I put dielectric grease on the connector. It would also explain why the 'engine system fault' detects an error in the reading between the map sensor and the turbo boost. If the sensor voltage is wrong it would not give the right values.
Fitting a new map sensor has not made any difference and it bears out the fact that the bigger list of errors started after the last time I messed about with the bank A map sensor connector.
So now I am going to investigate that connector properly and see if I can ensure that the contacts are making a really solid connection.
Does anyone know how to get hold of a wiring diagram for the L322? I want to know where the wires from the Map sensor go and also which wire is which in terms of power, ground and signal.
Thanks. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll book it in for a smoke test.

Nick: I have an IID Tool. Our problems do sound very similar but I know. O thing about electronics so testing wiring is beyond me!

Just a thought.

I've been assessing when my can goes in to limp mode. It happens under prolonged, moderate effort, like up a long straight hill. If I move the throttle pedal up and down a little under the same hill, I don't get the error. Under full power acceleration, everything is fine.

I am not getting any egr errors but if the two egr valves were not acting equally, or if there was restricted airflow through on of the egr pipes, could this cause a difference in boost pressure between the two sides of the engine?

I'm tempted to fit an egr blacking kit from eBay just to test this. What do you think?

Giles,
My car had the same symptoms, only when I was climbing hills with my caravan on the back, the engine system fault would appear and go into limp mode!
Turn off and back on again and normal service would resume. Just so sounds like my issue with the manifold!
Hope you get it sorted

Thanks David.

By manifold, are you referring to the actual rocker cover/ intake manifold over the cylinder head, or the central intake trunking piece between the two banks?
