That was the message I got this morning when I jumped in my car, although I topped it up I used water and it used a bit more than I thought it would, maybe a couple of litres or so. Obviously the antifreeze mix is now slightly compromised, I'll get some antifreeze and I'll pop some of that in when/if it goes low again. Anything to watch out for? Is it just standard antifreeze? I would normally look under the car to see if anything appearing on a dry drive, but for obvious reasons this hasn't been possible recently. I will keep an eye on the level but in the meantime, what sort of antifreeze and what concentration? Geoff |

2010 -> handbook lists Castrol SF antifreeze 50:50 mix, which is basically a PINK coolant. I have always used the pink silicate free halfords stuff, which is also an OAT coolant like the SF.

I see you have 5.0 SC like myself, keep an eye on level as mine needed new water pump and plastic pipes replaced to sort it out. Have a feel of water pump pulley for play or while engine running you can see the pulley wobble. From what i found out there common problems on this engine. |

Not a lot. There are basically two types of coolant, Green/Blue and Pink/Orange, so long as you don't mix the two types they can be considered the same, the only reason they handbook mentions Orange is to differentiate it from Blue/Green, once its in the car it's often difficult to tell the difference between Pink and Orange anyway. You can actually use either type in any engine, providing it says it's for mixed metal engines and you don't mix the two different types. The only real difference 'in practice' is the Pink/Orange lasts longer, so you don't have to replace it so often. So if you changed to Blue/Green you'd have to ignore the vehicle manufacturers change interval, and do it more often. All this fuss about using the 'correct' coolant (on most car forums), is a historic thing, years ago the majority of cooling systems were iron (block, water pump, thermostat housing etc) with a Brass radiator. When they started fitting engines with ally bits in the cooling system the old coolants of the time didn't stop the ally corroding, so you got bi metal corrosion and all sorts. These days all engines are mixed metal one way or another, so all coolants are compatible with all engines. |

Yep, the ready mixed is more or less the same price comparing like for like. ie. 10 litres of ready mixed costs about the same as 5 litres of concentrate. I went with ready mixed just for convenience. |
