Good half way stop between London & Edinburgh?

Planning a summer trip up to Scotland and want to break th drive in half, maybe an overnight stop or at least a long lunch. Can anyone suggest a nice half way stop between London & Edinburgh?

Nearby motorway-ish, chocolate box kinda village would be the brief....

Cheers, Greg Cheers, Greg

Which way are you planning on driving?

M1/M6/M74 etc or M1/A1? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

M1 A1 is the most direct, but then it gets a bit sketchy north of Newcastle, M74 way is further but has a shorter 2 lane section

I used to go M1 A1 back in the day but I had a faster car for overtaking back then...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ripley castle just north of Harrogate. You can always pop into Harrogate for a steam room experience then tea at Betty’s!

I would avoid the M6 route during peak times around Soke/ Manchester section.
Road works, 50mph, but horrendous delays for no apparent reason most days early morning and again at tea time. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Durham caravan club site is just off A1.
Durham is a nice place to visit.
The Caravan club site in Edinburgh is situated in a great location overlooking Firth of Forth.
Great bike ride from site through Dalmeney Estate to South Queensferry.

Knaresborough, Ripon, Harrogate, or for something a bit different, Masham, taking in the Theakston brewery.

You could drop by the Lakeland Motor Museum on your way past.

You could consider the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey or Cavendish Hotel at Baslow (near Chatsworth), both operated by Devonshire Estates. Only Range Rovers since 1988
