Just heard on the news JLR are cutting 1000 jobs due to dropping diesel sales!

Not renewing temp contracts of 1000 to be precise

General sales drop due to Brexit according to the report I read, but did acknowledge diesel uncertainty & that JLR are apparently 90% diesel sales which seemed high to me, but may be correct.

According to the news it’s all about uncertainty regarding diesel policies which appear to vary from area to area??

I’m now holding back (looking for a used FFRR) to see what happens.....

1000 temp contracts feels like too many though doesn’t it? I wonder what that is as a percentage of the workforce at these plants? Regardless it’s a great shame that these folk are losing their contracts due to a volte face on the merits of diesel. I was rattling to a chap who makes films about motorsport and he had recently spent time with JLR and said the enormous prototype shed is just full of battery powered vehicles. I guess long term you don’t need as much resource if you’re plonking a battery in.

I think JLR's excuse of blaming Brexit is taking the easy route. (no Im not turning this into a political in/out debate )

Personally - I think its the government current onslaught against the diesel driver they being of course the latest target for killing the planet thus an easy target for taxing / milking etc etc. I suspect the writing is on the wall for diesel vehicles.

Though it is unlikely that any Brexiteer will ever accept that any adverse news could ever be blamed on Brexit

Is it just about diesels and Brexit? I suspect JLR is coming up against more and better competition. JLR products are over priced compared to the rest of the market and their infotainment is rubbish. Their reliability is also poor compared to many others. And don’t mention the crap dealers....

I bought an Evoque for my wife when they were first launched, followed by a DS when they were first launched 3 years later. We looked earlier this year an E-Pace as a replacement for the DS. Ended up with a better spec’d Volvo XC40 First Edition for £10k less than the E-Pace and £5k less than a replacement DS. Dealer was execellent. Buying experience wonderful. They even offered 0% finance on 50% of the cost. The XC40 is a belter too.

Hopefully JLR generally will get a bit of a kicking by the competition over the next few years and have to take some time to review their pricing and customer service. MY23 D350 HSE

I kind of hope Phil is right.

JLR sales and marketing have far exceeded the quality of their cars and their after sales support function can't keep up and they have to a degree, been living off their brand/marque.

Their dealerships really are appalling in most matters of customer service and reliability on 4 of the 5 JLRs I have owned has been a joke......but I guess that is true of most business where sales just fly out of the door.....Why waste money on doing any more than "just enough?" - maybe they are beginning to wake up.......translated as - "it's now affecting their bottom line...." - thus reduce costs i.e. staff is usually the first line of defence of most business practices. Improve the product sadly often comes way down the pecking order.

From the 6 LR’s that I’ve owned I (fortunately) can’t relate to that unhappy experience.

However, the XC40 is a great example of what has happened as LR have gone more and more mass appeal; they wind up moving out of a niche and into a bear pit where any Tom, Dick or Harry can undercut (or outspec them) with “something similar” and eventually it comes down to price.

That’s an unusual (for a passenger car) windowless design on the XC40 Phil. Is it intended to be classed and taxed as a commercial vehicle (like the D4 & 5 Commercial variants)?
