[The new genuine pads I've just put on the front (6 pot brembo calipers) had a sticky adhesive layer on the back of each pad too.]

Thanks for that info - Interesting !
Why would they want you to grease a self adhesive pad - lol.

That suggests to me the WM instruction for the 6 pot brembos is an error (not unknown ?) Paul,

I'm confused.

If you're not supposed to follow the guidance manual and you're not supposed to grease the back of the pads where they come into contact with calliper Pistons, then where are you supposed to apply grease or ceramic equiivelant?

Ps... On many occasions when I've greased the rear of pads and piston contacts it has not banished brake squeal.

Confused

The only grease of probable benefit is between the pads & the contact areas they slide against on the calliper housing or carrier - depending if Brembo type or sliding housing type (eg RR rears).
However, for newish calipers - before the rust sets in, it's going to make minimal effect, because the pads should slide OK on the anodised aluminium of the calliper housing or plated cast iron of the carrier.
The 2 WMs for 2002 ~05 & 06 ~ 10 make no mention of using any grease on the pads.

I'm not surprised that grease between the pad & the piston made no difference to squeal, it actually makes it easier for the pad to vibrate & therefore make noise. Paul,

I have a new set of Land Rover 6 pot pads to fit to mine when it stops raining. For anyone interested, here is a pic of the back of one of the pads. That stuff with 3m VHB logos is just a protective backing sheet that pulls off to reveal a very thin, and very sticky translucent tape.

I’ve just ordered some new pads so this job is on the cards, I’m pretty sure that last time I just greased the edges of the pad but they did squeal a bit for a few hundred miles till they had bedded in. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
